A Beloved Corner of Barcelona

By ANDREW FERREN

Visitors in Barcelona rarely cross the city's broad Avinguda Diagonal, sticking close to the harborside Gothic quarter. But Barcelona natives love — and many live in — the quirky residential neighborhood of Gràcia, which fills the urban grid on Diagonal's north side, between Passeig de Gràcia and Passeig de Sant Joan. Once a separate town outside the city's (long-gone) medieval walls, Gràcia was eventually absorbed into the fabric of Barcelona. But it's never lost that village feeling and remains a jumble of narrow streets and tree-shaded plazas dotted with Art Nouveau architecture. Often the first address of 20- something natives and newly arrived expatriates, Gràcia today is a lot more vibrant — and international — than it used to be.
