R.I.P. Brandon Franklin (1987-2010)   On May 9, 2010, saxaphone player, member of TBC Brass Band, the heart of this film, father, and friend passed from this world to the next. You were a light in the darkness; your music touched, inspired and changed all who heard it. I know you are looking down on us from heaven. “I’ll fly away, oh Lord, I’ll fly away, when I die allelujah my oh my, I’ll fly away . . .”  We miss you, B. http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2010/05/hollygrove_shooting_victim_too.html

From the Mouthpiece On Back is an “inspiring” “incredible” feature-length documentary about the remarkable To Be Continued Brass Band’s courageous triumph over Hurricane Katrina–but it’s much more than that: it’s a tribute to their spirit, humor, and unique blend of jazz and hip-hop that keeps alive the spirit of New Orleans’ singular jazz heritage.

“If younger cats like us give up and stop playing our music, New Orleans will be losing a lot of its history.”

– Jason Slack, TBC Brass Band

“[TBC’s] music was extremely impressive, enough to get us thinking about doing a Paul Simon-type album that takes The Roots in a whole different musical direction. And their personal stories, with the social issues they brought up, got us to writing the darkest, most downtrodden, in-your-face and political music we’ve ever done.“

– ?uestlove, The Roots

“The memory of things gone is important to a jazz musician. Things like old folks singing in the moonlight in the back yard on a hot night or something said long ago.”

– Louis Armstrong
