Jerry Lee Lewis was better than Elvis Presley. Agree or disagree

I think in many ways Jerry Lee Lewis was better than Elvis Presley.

All Elvis fans don't be to quick to respond. Here me out.

Jerry Lee's live shows were just as dynamic as Elvis's were and if you think about it the body of Elvis work was singing those ridiculous movie tunes.

As a musician I believe he was and would have been much more respected.

Outside of that leather clad suit he wore during that acoustic set that we've all seen, Elvis was a crooner for the ladies giving away those scarfs for a kiss.

(All you guys that love Elvis better than Jerry Lee should have went to the stage and gotten a big ole kiss and a scarf)

Elvis sang songs for women. He didn't rock for us guys.

Back to Jerry Lee. He was a man's man who made a guy feel good to listen to his music.

It was rebellion the kind that got the respect of other musicians.

Here is a short list of the musicians who will appear on Jerry Lee's new album "Mean Old Man."

Keith Richards plays guitar on"Sweet Virginia."

Mick Jagger sings on "Dead Flowers."

Ronnie Wood plays guitar on the title track "Mean Old Man," (a song Kris Kristofferson wrote specifically for this album.)

Eric Clapton and James Burton back up Jerry Lee on "You Can Have Her."

Ringo Starr and John Mayer team up on "Roll Over Beethoven.

Other musicians on the album include Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Slash and Kid Rock.

Elvis never would have had a line-up like this to back him.

At 74, Jerry Lee is still at it and he's a "Mean Old Man."

As for Elvis, I really do like him, I just don't want a scarf and please no kisses.

AGREED!

I've always said that Jerry Lee was the true King of Rock & Roll.

Elvis was a great pop singer who became a pitiful Vegas lounge singer.

I like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis but Elvis was the King and Jerry Lee is a bad boy and that is cool.

They are both very good at what they do in the case of Elvis he was and Jerry still is.

They are/were both talented, but I'd much rather listen to EP sing than JLL.

JT,
I like Jerry Lee, but if it wasn't for Elvis, you would have never heard of Jerry Lee, or any of those other greats helping him on his new album.

If Buddy Holly had not died in an airplace crash at the age of twenty-two in 1959 ("The Day The Music Died"), he probably would have wound up better than all of them.

His recording career lasted only a year and a half . . . and yet he is still recognized as one of the most influential and beloved early rock artists of all time.

E was better.

The problem is people have a tendency to remember what Elvis . . . became . . . and not what he was prior to his military exile.

Actually, I'd say Chuck Berry is the best
of all the 50's rockers.

I agree, Jerry Lee was just a true Rocker from the start.

In response to the original post that started this thread:

It depends. I would agree that Jerry Lee was better than anything Elvis did post-1960 (except for Elvis' brief, amazing comeback period in 1968-69), and that he was probably a better live performer. But Elvis' first wave in the '50's before he enlisted was pretty great. Jerry Lee doesn't top that.

Actually, as far as the first wave of '50's rock stars is concerned, I would consider Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly the kings. They were both great songwriters and performers, and they both left behind a body of amazing songs that had tremendous impact and influence on all the British bands that followed.

Jerry Lee, overall, makes me a little uneasy. It's almost as if he couldn't make up his mind whether to be a rocker, a Southern Christian preacher, or a pervert who took advantage of underage girls (by marrying his 14 year-old cousin).

Michael Fox says:
I totally agree - between the two I much prefer Jerry Lee Lewis.
Elvis is an institution, a legend who has millions of fans who believe he can do no wrong; but during the late 50's Jerry Lee Lewis had him beat by a mile - and he's still rocking. If Elvis was still alive, he'd be in Vegas singing ballads for the ladies.

As much as I like Jerry Lee as a rock 'n' roller, I actually prefer his country stuff. "Another Place, Another Time" is one of my five favorite country singles ever.

Jim, I couldn't agree more; Jerry Lee's 70s country output was phenomenal.

You don't know that for sure, it's pure speculation. If it's the hip factor you're considering, I think Elvis would even have better backing. Springsteen, Dylan, and Robert Plant all would probably back him. Even Johnny Cash got the star-studded tribute before his death.

As for your initial comparison, I wouldn't choose one over the other as both are important.

I Disagree.
It's ELVIS for me.
Not even close.
Much better voice,
though Jerry Lee plays
a mean piano.
Take Care. Pat.
