From the Commander

... to a New Year

Well ... we've put away the 2009 calendar and started in on 2010. So much opportunity lies ahead when you look at the January page and it's easy to dream about all things we'll do now that the New Year has arrived. Diets have started and the gym is more crowded now that everyone's New Year's resolutions have kicked into high gear. So many new things are happening just because we turned the page on the calendar.

The Air Force Band is no different. There are so many opportunities awaiting us just around the corner in 2010. Deployments, concerts, shows, ceremonies, chamber music, tours, TDYs, broadcasts and recording sessions to name a few.

Ringing in the Holiday Season

On December 4 - 6, the Concert Band and Singing Sergeants performed "Hooray for Holidays", a program that featured holiday music from movies, stage, and television. Despite the weekend's inclement weather, over 6,000 people came to Daughter's of the American Revolution Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., for the annual series. This year's concerts also featured a children's program for local elementary and middle school students, many of whom were treated to a musical demonstration by members of the Band.

Glenn Miller Tribute

In early December, the Airmen of Note traveled to Montgomery, Ala. to perform a holiday tribute to legendary bandleader Major Glenn Miller. The concert, presented yearly in the majestic Montgomery Performing Arts Center, is jointly sponsored by the City of Montgomery and Maxwell Air Force Base's Air University, under the command of Lt. Gen. Allen G. Peck. As the direct descendant of Major Miller's Army Air Corp Dance Band, members of the Airmen of Note have a special place in their hearts for the "Glenn Miller Sound."

30th Annual National Menorah Lighting

On Sunday, December 14, the Concert Band, along with over 1,000 rain-soaked onlookers, took part in the 2009 National Menorah lighting ceremony. The event marked the 30th anniversary of the first ceremony on the ellipse in 1979. White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel lit the National Menorah, part of the eight-day festival of Hanukkah that began on Friday, December 12.

The Concert Band provided pre-show music, and accompanied the cantors during the ceremony. The program included a patriotic rendition of "God Bless America."

Chili Recipe for These Cold Winter Months!

We are now moving into the coldest months of winter here in the D.C. area, and nothing hits the spot like a good bowl of hot chili! Therefore, we want to share with you the winning recipe of The USAF Band's 2009 Chili Cook-Off! The winner was Mrs. Bettye Sierichs, the wife of our Band Commander. Make it for yourself--you'll see why her chili took first place! We thank Mrs. Sierichs for sharing her recipe with all of us.
Chili - by Bettye Sierichs

1 ½ pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
1 fresh jalapeno, seeded and chopped
1 13 oz can beef broth
1 small can tomato sauce
2 15 oz cans Pinto beans, drained
2 12 oz bottles Heinz Chili Sauce
3 beef bouillon cubes
Chili powder, crushed red pepper, paprika, salt and pepper to taste
24 oz of water (2 empty chili bottles filled w/ water)

Brown meat with onion, green pepper and jalapeno pepper for 10 minutes. Add rest of ingredients and cook on medium temperature, covered, for 45 minutes.

I like to make it at least a day before I am serving it to let it sit in the fridge for a day or two... I think that this improves the flavor.
