Message from the President

Welcome to The Hastings Center

from Thomas H. Murray, President

Thomas MurrayIn the 21st century, medicine and science will shape our lives and the lives of our descendents more powerfully than ever. From conception and birth, to a myriad of critical choices throughout our lives, to the details of our dying, we face increasingly complex and momentous decisions. The Hastings Center has a responsibility to help people confront these choices lucidly and wisely, and to make certain our laws and institutions support, rather than impede, making good decisions. Please help us fulfill this responsibility by making a donation to the Center today.

At the Center, we create and share knowledge about ways medicine and science impact our lives through our research projects, journals, clinical education programs, and our participation in government and private advisory committees. In 2007, we established a public affairs and communications department to share knowledge with policy makers, journalists, and other opinion leaders, as part of a new initiative called Bioethics and the Public Interest

All of the Center’s activities are enriched by the participation of our Fellows an elected international network of leading thinkers in their fields. Fellows also support the Center with annual dues and donations.

The Hastings Center relies on donors, as well as grant-making agencies and foundations, to support its activities. Donations play an especially important role by funding the development of new research projects, which require a significant investment of staff time to plan and write grant applications. Donations also support new ways to communicate, such as Bioethics Forum, and extend our ability to share research findings well beyond the lifetime of a grant. Please consider becoming a Supporting Member of the Center or giving at one of our higher giving levels.

The enthusiastic participation of individual donors will be essential to sustaining Bioethics and the Public Interest, the initiative to communicate directly with policy makers, journalists and opinion leaders. Launched with a $2.1 million grant from the Ford Foundation, which covers 60 percent of the initiative’s costs over three years, this is a vital new direction for the Center. The associated increase in communications, research, and administrative capacity will add $2 million to the Center’s annual operating budget by the fifth year of the initiative. Our Board of Directors is planning a fundraising campaign to sustain this new direction.

More information about the Center’s operating budget and recent activities is available in the annual report. You may also learn more about the Center’s gift acceptance policy, tax-exempt status, and the variety of other ways to give on this website or by calling our Development Director, Lyn Traverse, at 845-424-4040 ext. 230 or email traversel@thehastingscenter.org. Checks may be mailed to her at 21 Malcolm Gordon Road, Garrison, NY 10524.

I hope you will consider supporting The Hastings Center with a tax-deductible donation today.
