Building or not?
11 June 2010 | 15:49 |
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has told once again the European Union ambassadors why Bulgaria will not build Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline. The residents of the district of Burgas oppose the project and, in addition, there might be an oil spill like the one in the Gulf of Mexico, because the Gulf of Burgas is narrow and the sea is rough. What is more, the oil pipeline crosses NATURA 2000 areas. Borisov said this is the case with the construction of Belene NPP.
A lot of money will be invested and it is not clear when it will pay off, he said and added the second nuclear power plant will be built when it is clear how much it will cost and whether there is an investor, since there is not any now.
Council of Ministers did not decide to stop Burgas-Alexandroupolis project and to freeze Belene NPP project, Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Traycho Traykov said in the sidelines of the parliamentary question time in reference to the statement made by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov before the EU ambassadors that our country will suspend Burgas-Alexandroupolis project and will freeze Belene NPP project.
Regarding Burgas – Alexandroupolis oil pipeline, Traykov said: “I cannot believe he had said it”.
"We have not decided not to participate in either one or the other project," he said.
Asked whether the prime minister’s words take him by surprise, he said: “I am surprised by your claim.”
