Necsa at a Glance

The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) was established as a public company in terms of the Nuclear Energy Act, 1999 and is wholly-owned by the State. Apart from several ancillary functions, the main functions of Necsa are to undertake and promote research and development in the field of nuclear energy and radiation sciences and technology; to process source material, special nuclear material and restricted material; and to co-operate with persons in matters falling within these functions.

In 22 years, 99% of all immediate fatalities in the power generation industry were not nuclear related. Today, hundreds of nuclear
power stations safely provide 16% of the world’s electricity.

Nuclear Energy and SHEQ

 The exposure of Necsa’s staff to radiation is not only a measure of their safety, but also of the safety and health of local citizens and the environment. Last year, the dose per radiation worker was 97% less than the annual limit allowed.
