Serena could meet sister Venus in the semi-finals
|
World number one Serena Williams beat Andrea Petkovic 6-2 3-6 6-0 to make the Italian Open quarter-finals in Rome. Williams, 28, is making her comeback from a knee injury and the tournament is her first since she won the Australian Open in January. Her older sister Venus, 29, made it a family double as she defeated Israel's Shahar Peer 6-3 6-4. The pair are on course to meet in the semi-finals having being placed in the same half of the draw. Serena Williams looked rusty at times and had to overcome a second-set slump before despatching the 49th-ranked German. She got off to a good start in her match against Petkovic, winning the first set with a five-game streak.

However, she didn't get going in the second and quickly fell 4-1 behind before eventually conceding it 6-3. But in the third set Williams came out aggressively and dominated her opponent, wrapping up the decider to love. "It went crazy in the second set. I started really well but then I was down and out in the second", admitted Williams. "I was glad to win because you're guaranteed another match and I need it because you could see today I was rusty." Venus had been sidelined with a knee problem of her own since losing the Key Biscayne final to Kim Clijsters in Miami last month. The world number four overcame the 21st-ranked Peer after a keenly-contested contest. Britain's Anne Keothavong is out of the women's doubles in Rome. The British number three and her partner Petkovic, knocked out of the singles earlier in the day by Serena Williams, went down 6-2 6-2 to Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta in just 52 minutes.
