These are some of the highlighths fo Paris:

Arc de Triomphe
Built to celebrate Napoleon's victories, the Arc de Triomphe stands guard over an eternal flame, marking the remains of an unknown soldier from World War I. From the top of the Arc, you can take a look down the busy major roads that radiate out from its central position, especially the spectacular view along the Champs Elysees.

Champs Elysees
For a shopping break Paris style you must visit the Champs Elysees. Running between the Arc de Triomphe at one end, and Place de la Concorde at the other, the elm-lined Champs Elysees is regarded by Parisians as the most beautiful Avenue in the world.
Always busy, the Champs Elysees is a glimpse into a more elegant world, with Haute Couture fashion houses and exclusive clubs and restaurants giving way to grand 18th Century mansions and gardens. From here you can see the Petit Palais and glass-domed Grand Palais, on the other side of the Avenue from the vast gardens of the presidential residence - the Elysees Palace.

Eiffel Tower
Perhaps the most iconic landmark in Paris, the Eiffel Tower is a must see on any weekend in Paris. Built in 1889 for the World Fair, it is well worth a closer look - particularly from the Trocadero and the stunning views that this affords. The tower stands at 320m (1050 ft) high and has three different levels accessible by foot or lift, as well as a restaurant on the second floor. The third level, the top of the tower, offers the best views of Paris. At night, the tower is illuminated and can look quite magical after sunset.

The Louvre
For a cultural weekend Paris is hard to beat. Le Louvre is now home to some of the world's most famous works of art, but was originally built as a palace, becoming a museum during the Revolution. Entering by the controversial giant glass pyramid in front of the majestic palace, you will need plenty of time to take in the whole museum - although the presence of excited crowds will lead you to the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo.

Montmartre and the Sacre Coeur
Rising above Paris, Montmartre is a bustle of small streets, many of which have been homes and studios to some of the 19th and 20th centuries' greatest artists - from Dali to Degas, Monet to Picasso. Many young unknown artists now offer paintings for sale in Place du Tertre, where you will also find a number of portrait artists offering you a personal souvenir - if you are tempted, it is advised that you agree a price with the artist first.
Crowning the hill is the white stone Basilique Sacre Coeur, which you can explore both outside and in - the view of Paris from outside the cathedral rivals that from the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Musee d'Orsay
Housed in a former railway station, with its clock still in pride of place, the Mus?e d'Orsay houses a vast collection of 19th century art - and is a must for fans of The Impressionists. The museum lists amongst its many masterpieces works by Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, Cezanne, and Van Gogh, as well as a gallery featuring a number of sculptures by Rodin. This is a recommended place to visit on one of our weekends in Paris.

Notre Dame
Another of Paris's most famous landmarks, Notre Dame de Paris stands impressively on an island in the middle of the Seine. Another must see on one of our weekends in Paris. The 13th Century cathedral is a masterpiece of gothic architecture with magnificent stained-glass rose windows, and the famous flying buttresses that immediately evoke the spirit of old Paris. From the west facade you can look down on the river, and think of the Hunchback surrounded by the grotesque gargoyles.

Le Pigalle
Towards the Seine from Montmartre, the Pigalle, Paris's infamous red-light district, has a certain seedy glamour. The area is home to a large number of small restaurants and, of course, the Moulin Rouge nightclub, where the Can-Can is still performed.

Pompidou Centre
Built in the 1970s, the Centre Georges Pompidou is one of Paris's most popular attractions, famous for its colours and exposed tubing and pipe-work. The museum boasts two floors of twentieth century art plus a constantly changing selection of exhibitions. For a great view of Paris, you can take the glass-tubed escalator to the roof bar and enjoy the view. Outside, you can enjoy street entertainment, while surrounded by architecture and sculptures as interesting as the centre itself.
