State monuments mark historic moments

It always starts with good intentions. A town, a group or perhaps an individual wants to commemorate an event, remember a local hero or honor a favorite son or daughter. Funds are raised and, with great fanfare, monuments are erected. The event becomes fodder for the local news, people come to see it, and history is captured in stone and bronze.
