Oklahoma’s left-lane law could help pick up pace

My pal, Bubba, tells everyone he lives "in the fast lane.” But you have to wonder. It seems he always has a lot of traffic behind him ... right behind him.

When will it ever be that Oklahoma joins other states that have a "stay right” law concerning which lane to drive in? Can we ever get those who slow everybody down in the left lane to stay over in the right until they need to pass? You get those pokey Joes holding up those going the speed limit by being under it and they won’t move over no matter what. What would it take to make a law requiring the slower traffic to stay right?

Bob

There is a law in place now, Bob, as was pointed out recently by Les, a reader in Edmond.

House Bill 1368, effective Nov. 1, 2009, requires drivers on multilane highways to remain in the right lane unless they are passing other vehicles.

It does not apply to those driving in the far-left lane because of traffic conditions, flow, or road configuration.

This was the work of state Reps. Chuck Hoskin, D-Vinita; Mike Ritze, R-Broken Arrow; and Glen Bud Smithson, D-Sallisaw; as well as state Sens. Kenneth Corn, D-Poteau; and Joe Sweeden, D-Pawhuska.

Gov. Brad Henry signed it into law on April 30.

You can read the full text of the left-lane law by going to the state statutes (Title 47-11-301 and Title 47-11-309).

If you are one of those who simply prefer to drive in the left lane, though you aren’t traveling as fast as others in that lane, you’ll have to move over.

It’s not only a safety issue, it’s the law.

By the way ...

Don’t forget that there are speed limits, whichever lane you are in, and the ticket can be an expensive one if you violate them.

Enjoy your week and drive safely.
