Picture of Dayah

Hi, my name is Dayah, and I am the EPrints training co-ordinator. The EPrints team is working hard to deliver high quality training courses to help you and your institution get the full benefit from your repository.

I look forward to meeting the members of your repository team at our next event.

You can email me at: nba08r@ecs.soton.ac.uk.

Upcoming Courses

The next training course will be on 24th - 26th March 2010. It will be run in conjunction with the JISC dotAC project and the Web Science Research Initiative and will feature a day dedicated to Linked Data.

If you wish to arrange for a course to be held within your institution or organisation, please contact EPrints Services.

In the mean time, the full course materials are available online for free in the EPrints Training Collection.

Why attend an EPrints Training Course?

Running a successful Institutional Repository requires skilled personnel who can make effective management and technical decisions that benefit the institution's staff and promotes the institution's research.

The EPrints training course caters for all members of a repository team - librarians, managers, and technical staff - promoting a shared understanding of the knowledge and skills required for the team to deliver and maintain an effective repository.

Programme Overview

Through demonstrations, lectures and hands-on exercises, supervised by members of the EPrints development team, attendees will become proficient in designing and configuring an EPrints repository.

Day 1 - Repository Capabilities and Customisation

The first part of the course covers the range of EPrints 3.2 capabilities and is useful for managers and library staff to understand the broad range of facilities that they can use for information management, access and reuse. It is also useful for the technical staff who will ultimately be implementing their requirements.

What you will learn:

  • Capabilities of the EPrints 3.2 software
  • How to configure the functionality of your repository - metadata, workflow, authority lists, browsing, searching
  • How to customise the appearance of your repository - branding and visual identity

Day 2 - Advanced Repository Customisation

The next part of the course explores customisation at a deeper level, addressing the EPrints scripting API used to produce bespoke reports, import and export plugins, tailor-made authority files and new action screens.

What you will learn:

  • The EPrints data model
  • How to access and manipulate EPrints using the API
  • How to write plugins for EPrints - import/export, action screens

Day 3 - Linked Data for Institutions and Repositories

This separate day is devoted to the application of Linked Data principles in an institutional environment. No charge is made for attending this day.

The first half of the day introduces the concepts of Linked Data through the example of the RKBExplorer service built by a team at Southampton (www.rkbexplorer.com). This exemplar Linked Data service processes data from a number of repositories and other sources, and uses advanced identity management techniques to identify co-references between data sources, enabling a coherent combined view to be formed over multiple datasets.

The second half of the workshop focuses on helping delegates to envisage publishing their metadata into the Linked Data world, as well as being able to consume the metadata from their own and others' repositories, and from other Linked Data sources. We shall additionally outline plans for the provision of Linked Data publishing facilities within ePrints, and look forward to discussions regarding these tools with repository owners and maintainers.

What you will learn

  • What is Linked Data and the Semantic Web
  • How URIs should be assigned and used for named entities
  • Issues and techniques related to identity management and co-reference
  • How to use a variety of Linked Data services and resources
  • Plans currently in development for including Linked Data support within ePrints

What you will learn:

  • What is Linked Data and the Semantic Web
  • How URIs should be assigned and used for named entities
  • How linked data is managed in EPrints
  • How to use a variety of linked data services and resources

Question and Answer Sessions

The course will also include opportunities to meet and network with EPrints repository staff working at Southampton, providing insights into the repository management issues involved in delivering a successful EPrints service. Time will be given to help solve any problems that you may have with your repository.

Lunch and refreshments are provided on each day. There will also be an evening social event on day 1.
