Fashion designer Alexander McQueen, whose funky avant-garde designs have influenced Lady Gaga among others, has died, a spokesperson for the designer confirmed to MTV News. The BBC reported that paramedics were called to his London home Thursday morning (February 11), where he was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, McQueen's death is not being treated as suspicious.

No further details about his passing have been released, and reports that his death was a suicide were unconfirmed at press time.

"He has passed away," said a spokeswoman for Gucci Group, which owns the designer's fashion house, according to The Wall Street Journal. Samantha Garrett, a spokeswoman for the British fashion design icon, confirmed that McQueen's body was found at his London home Thursday morning. "We don't have any information in terms of circumstances," she added.

"On behalf of Lee McQueen's [the designer's given name] family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family," read a statement from the designer's office. "Lee's family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this."

Born in London in 1969, Lee McQueen apprenticed on Savile Row and later studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. He was discovered by the late stylist and tastemaker Isabella Blow, who committed suicide in 2007. The two were close friends, and he dedicated his 2008 collection to her.

McQueen was voted England's Designer of the Year four times between 1996 and 2003 and was later named head designer at the Paris couture house Givenchy. His designs have been worn by everyone from Lady Gaga to Sarah Jessica Parker.
