The sainthood which Martin Luther King is held is enough to send anyone to sleep. Yes, the man was a voice for equal rights. However there is a less savoury side to King. We never hear about his clandestine meetings with officials from the Soviet Embassy or the fact that he paid girls to engage in unorthodox sexual practices, as was discovered by accident when his room was bugged because of his meetings with the Soviets! This man is no saint. A fine public speaker and a champion of his people most certainly, but certainly no saintly figure. With all the reverence heaped on King its no wonder Bill fell asleep.

Tony, these are the sort of comments which conservatives make that puts people off.

Whilst the rest of the world looked away, one man laid down his life for the cause of freedom (Which conservatives claim to believe in) and you say his rememberance is capable of sending you to sleep!

Rather than accept that King was a truly phenomenal human being, you choose to focus on his human failings.

I could do the same for Churchill,Thatcher, Reagan and Disreali but I wont because all human beings are imperfect.

Conservatives would be taken more seriously if we paid our respects to great men irrespective of their political affiliations rather than attempt to belittle their achievements because they are not 'one of us'.

Forget about the subject of the speech.
This was a boring speaker and Clinton got bored.

I doubt you'll see this on the BBC. I remember back in 1999/2000, Gore made plenty of Faux pas and yet the BBC seemed to only cover those made by Bush

Great stuff! "I have a dream", indeed!

I don't think Clinton was really falling asleep. By prentending to though he's done much for his status amongst Democrats who find all the phoney-baloney about "civil rights" deeply irritating but are too politically correct to say so.

He may very well also have enraged a lot of black Democrats, who will be voting for Barack Obama, and in so doing he may have done untold damage to the Democrat Party's coalition.

Let's hope so!

Michael Ehioze-Ediae, my point is that Martin Luther King is not the saint people make him out to be. He was a puppet of the Soviets and used prostitutes to perform acts so gross that I can't repeat them here. These are facts. I want to be able to respect a person, but I can't respect Martin Luther King. However I concede that he was a skilled political activist and a sensational public speaker.

Bill was falling asleep, period. And we ought to stop "excusing" those who've committed sexual perfidy. It's not "boys will be boys." Clinton should have signed or gotten fired for Monica.
