Conservative-led Birmingham City Council is planning to raise £6 million over the next ten years. This seems a very sensible way of keeping the Council Tax down. My own Council, Hammersmith and Fulham, is hoping to generate revenue of £1 million a year on billboard advertising on Council owned sites. Of course there must aesthetic constraints but quite often there will be sites that will be perfectly suitable from that point of view - along busy roads - where the potential revenue had simply not been considered.
According to the Birmingham Post planned advertising sites include one by New Street Station. We already make our Council newspaper in Hammersmith and Fulham self financing through taking ads. Birmingham are to start selling space in their Council publications. They are also planning to sell advertising on their 300 vehicles and even staff uniforms. Why not?
