"Siege," Marvel Comics' next big event series, kicks off today with an explosive first issue. Last month, we showed you some of the art from the personalized "Siege" #1 that arrived at Splash Page HQ, but now you can check out the issue for yourself.

According to "Siege" writer Brian Bendis, the event should be of interest to more than just the regular Marvel faithful — anyone looking forward to the 2012 "Avengers" movie might want to pick it up, too.

"For those hungry for the 'Avengers' movie — see what I'm doing here — this 'Siege' event will really whet your appetite," laughed Bendis. Read more...

FROM MULTIPLAYER: Yesterday's release of "Darksiders: Wrath of War" is apparently just the first step for THQ in their quest to spread the franchise far and near.

Speaking with VG247, comics veteran Joe Madureira, who acted as creative director on the game, said that THQ has been actively shopping it around and has already gotten some bites.

Darksiders

Said Madureira, "We’ve gotten some interest from Hollywood, we’ve talked about doing a comic series." He went on to say that THQ is really in charge of those negotiations, not the developer, Vigil Games.

Ex MachinaTHE STORY: "Ex Machina" by Brian K. Vaughan (W) and Tony Harris (A) — WildStorm Productions

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Mitchell Hundred is much more than just The Great Machine, a superhero gifted with the unprecedented ability to communicate with all forms of technology and machinery — he's also the mayor of New York City, a position he was elected into after saving one of the Twin Towers on the fateful day of September 11, 2001.

Hanging up his superhero duds for a suit and tie, Mitchell is forced to wade through the murky waters of political and super-powered threats alike, learning along the way that those two worlds aren't always mutually exclusive. Read more...

Iron Man 2EDITOR'S NOTE: With "Iron Man 2" just a few months away from hitting theaters, MTV News contacted War Machine co-creator Bob Layton to discuss the character's upcoming debut on the big screen. The conversation covered a wide range of subjects that we're rolling out this week in a four-part series — continuing with today's tale of his "Iron Man 2" set visit and the disagreement he moderated while he was there.

Longtime “Iron Man” writer and artist Bob Layton is recognized as one of the most signi
ficant creators to chronicle Tony Stark’s adventures, so it's probably no surprise that he was called upon to help settle a creative disagreement between director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. during his visit to the “Iron Man 2” set last summer.

“When I first got on the set, there was a dispute going on between Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. about [Jim Rhodes’] character,” Layton explained to MTV News. “That’s how I was introduced to them. It was like, ‘here’s the guy who helped created the character, why don’t we ask him?’" Read more...

Spider-ManBrian Michael Bendis may not be writing the script for "Spider-Man 4," but that doesn't mean he doesn't know how he would approach the film. Rob Liefeld, meanwhile, remains extremely confident that Bretty Ratner is the right director to bring "Youngblood" to theaters, and according to a tweet yesterday, Ratner is still on board.

In non-movie-related posts, Chris Ryall reminisced about retiring pitcher Randy Johnson's famous bird-killer pitch, which is quite a sight to see if you've never watched the replay. Scope out those retweets after the jump along with Tom Brevoort's take on Matt Smith in "Doctor Who" and a contemplation of Disney's line-waiting policies.

It's all in the Twitter Report for January 6, 2010. Read more...

Mass Effect: RedemptionIn just a few short weeks, gamers will explore the galaxy once again with Commander Shepard in "Mass Effect 2." No need to wait until then to reacquaint yourself with BioWare's refreshingly original sci-fi scenario however. On newsstands today is issue one of "Mass Effect: Redemption," the fruits of a collaboration between's the game's developer and Dark Horse Comics.

Let's get the simple facts out of the way first: if you haven't played or aren't familiar with the "Mass Effect" universe, "Redemption" is not the best place to start. The beginnings of a story laid out in the first issue entertain, but newcomers will be lost without the proper context. The first game excelled at introducing players to BioWare's multi-layered intergalactic society in drip-feed helpings. "Redemption" expects that you know why Elcor talk the way they do and what bone the humans have to pick with everyone else.

As re-introductions go however, it's just what you're looking for. (Oh, and consider this your SPOILER ALERT.) Read more...

With "Youth in Revolt" bringing Michael Cera to theaters this week, it's only natural that when we had a chance to chat with him during the film's red carpet premiere, Splash Page had to sneak in a few questions about another little film he's involved in: "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World."

"When we were shooting, they were cutting the movie as we were shooting," Cera told MTV News when asked how much of director Edgar Wright's finished film he'd seen. "[Wright] would bring down his laptop every day and show us stuff. So, I've kind of seen the whole thing out of order, but I haven't seen anything cut together... except on the last day, he showed the whole crew a 40-minute reel." Read more...

GantzBack in October word got out that Hiroya Oku's hyper-violent ongoing sci-fi manga "Gantz" would be entering the realm of live-action features with a two-film franchise directed by Shinsuke Sato and written by Yusuke Watanabe. Now, a 15-second teaser has hit the Web, giving fans a brief look at what the future might hold for the film series.

"Gantz" follows a cynical Tokyo college student after his apparent subway tunnel death and subsequent reanimation at the hands of a mysterious black sphere. He and others like him are gathered in an anonymous room in the city, provided with weapons and loosed on bizarre alien-kiling missions. Very few are successful.

While the teaser posted on YouTube doesn't reveal much about the film, there's a quick shot of stars Kazunari Ninomiya ("Letters From Iwo Jima") and Ken'ichi Matsumaya ("Death Note") in their black combat suits, which appear to be pretty faithful to the source material. Read more...

DESCFile this one under awesome news — the writers of "Zombieland" are taking their bloody appetites to "Deadpool."

According to Variety, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick — the writing duo behind "Zombieland" and Sony's proposed "Venom" movie — have been hired to pen the screenplay for "Deadpool," the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" spin-off starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular merc with a mouth.

Reese and Wernick are reportedly sticking closely to "the mythology of 'Deadpool' given that Reynolds is a huge fan and protector of the property." While Reynolds has already stated his desire to stay true to Deadpool's comic book roots in the past, it's still great to hear that Reese and Wernick are on board with the actor's vision. Spider-Man 4Last month, a report hit the 'Net that "Spider-Man 4" production had been put on "indefinite hold" due to problems with the script — specifically, the choice of villain for the next chapter in the Sony Pictures franchise. Asked for comment on the report, the studio confirmed that production had indeed halted for the holidays, but denied that there was anything endangering the project's production schedule. Now, it seems, the story has changed yet again.

According to a report on Deadline Hollywood, production continues to be stalled on "Spider-Man 4" due to a difference of opinion between director Sam Raimi and the studio over the film's script, and now the film could miss the mark for its intended May 5, 2011, release date.

This report has been partially confirmed to MTV News by an informed source close to the film who said a May 2011 premiere has now become uncertain, and significant work is still being done on the script. Read more...
