Government mistakes, Conservative inaccuracy

CSC Statement: Islamic Shakhsiyah Foundation and Hizb ut-Tahrir 26 November 2009

Yesterday the leader of the Opposition, David Cameron, accused the government of using money allocated to prevent violent extremism to fund the Islamic Shakhsiyah Foundation (ISF), a registered educational charity with links to the extreme Islamist party Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT).

The government’s response – contesting the source of the public funds and publicising previously unpublished Ofsted inspections – is an attempt to divert attention. Public money has gone to two primary schools and a nursery set up by members of HT, a revolutionary Islamist group that supports violent jihad and uses front groups to embed its divisive ideology into local communities.

Debate: Ayaan Hirsi Ali vs Ed Husain - 'The West and the future of Islam'

On 20th November, the Centre for Social Cohesion hosted an evening debate in Westminster between Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the former Dutch MP and self-declared Muslim apostate, and Ed Husain, the author of the best-selling book The Islamist.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali argues that Islam 'as a body of ideas' is opposed to 'Enlightenment' values. Ed Husain advocates an Islamic 'renaissance' arguing that Islam can be re-interpreted to meet the challenges of the modern world.

The nativist response to the Swiss minaret ban

This is a guest post by CSC Research intern, Deborah Garel:

The response to the Swiss ban on minarets has triggered extensive criticisms from most other European governments. Nonetheless, it has inspired European nativist parties to take similar measures, revealing a fear of Islam felt by some European communities and the desire of extremist parties to exploit this.

Another Huge Blow to Bunglawala's Credibility

This is from the latest entry in my Standpoint blog:

In a Parliamentary committee room last week, I witnessed the Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), Mohammed Abdul Bari, present evidence at a Communities and Local Government (CLG) hearing about the effectiveness of the Prevent agenda.  As well as being reminded of just how little this man and his organisation had to offer to such a complex debate, I was also struck that CLG still sought their opinion.  Three days after the hearing, Martin Bright gave us yet more evidence about the unpleasant nature of the MCB.
