UK Escorts – Regarding the legal status

Prostitution in Great Britain is actually legal, but there are certain rules that must be adhered to, providing this is done there should be no problem. The prostitute and customer must be aged 18 or over, sexual services for money or goods are acceptable here regarding the law. However, this subject has to be looked at in depth, brothel keeping, pimping, soliciting in a public place are all illegal. Kerb crawling, and having sex in public or a public place are further examples of unlawful activities. Figures revealed back in 2003 estimated that in London 1 in 300 women were in the prostitution business; in Amsterdam 1 in 35 was the estimation.

The laws in the United Kingdom need to be examined concerning this industry, because there are several rules and regulations stated when this profession does become illegal. This article will cover the legal status to indicate how the law works regarding this industry.  The first paragraph mentioned what was considered illegal, so outlining this subject will be covered in more detail.

England and Wales

Street prostitution is certainly illegal; this includes soliciting in a public place or loitering by the roadside.

This law applies to clients also, kerb crawling from a vehicle also, Sir Allan Green was guilty of this back in 1991. His resignation soon followed, being the head of the Crown Prosecution Service left him with no option in leaving his post.

Brothel keeping is also illegal, this establishment are considered brothels when 2 or more prostitutes practice under the same roof.

Escort agencies fall into this catergory as well; this comes into being because the agency is controlling the Escorts.

The Sexual offences act 2003 stipulated wht a prostitute is considered so: Some who offers or provides sex to another person for financial gain. Working as a prostitute is actually legal, providing this is done in privacy, this applies to outcall Escorts also.

Child prostitution takes place when the person involved is under the age of 18; this is when the paying customer commits an offence and would be subject to prosecution.

Pimping is illegal, because controlling the prostitute for financial benefits is an offence also.

UK prostitution laws and the reforming in general

The government wanted to make prostitution illegal in 2008 / 2009; the idea behind this was to target clients and prostitutes alike. Brothel owners and pimps would be affected as well making this industry pretty much unlawful all round.

The current laws were considered negative; Dr Suzanne Jenkins felt that the legal approach needed amending. Indoor premises were okay providing only one person was present, more than one it became a brothel. Past history shows that the police forces have had zero tolerance in connection to prostitution and red light districts. ECP on the other hand is an organisation in favour relating to this profession, the English Collective of Prostitutes wants this to become legal.

In years gone by there have been many debates on this delicate subject, currently “anti prostitution “is one of the policies still on the agenda. These discussions have brought up countries like Germany, New Zealand and Holland where this is accepted and part of everyday life. Iceland, Norway and Sweden however do not take this view, so should the government go along with what the latter 3 countries believe. There was a possibility to allow small brothels in England and Wales, because in 2006 this was discussed. The outcome was in opposition to this happening, and if anything the law was tightened regarding prostitution, so things remained as they were.

The government decided to make it illegal to pay for sex, the mini-brothels idea had completely backfired leaning towards stricter laws instead. The ECP felt that criminalising clients would also have effect in minimising the safety of sex workers. This tougher approach by the government started to take shape in 2008; the Home Secretary announced a statement making prostitution even less acceptable. She said that paying for sex where a pimp is involved would be a criminal offence, and there was more to come. Clients who knowingly paid for sex from an illegally trafficked woman could face rape charges, first-time offenders included. The ECP were not happy about this, and their belief was the government were exaggerating the problem regarding trafficking.

The GBM Union has the International Union of Sex Workers as part of their members; they campaign for human equality, and also for civil and labour rights connected to the sex industry.

Similar laws apply in Scotland also, although there are some variations  regarding this subject.
