Nelson Mandela

(At the time the freedom was conferred upon Nelson Mandela by the City Council he was serving life imprisonment in South Africa. The original Freedom Scroll was received on his behalf by Mr. Ralph Mzamo, a representative of the African National Congress during an A.N.C. Rally in Newcastle upon Tyne on Saturday 4th October 1986. Following Nelson Mandela's release from prison in 1991 he was subsequently elected President of South Africa. During a visit to the United Kingdom in 1993 at a joint ceremony in the City Hall, Glasgow, together with other British local authorities who had also conferred the honour upon him, Nelson Mandela was presented with a substitute Freedom Scroll by the then Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne, Councillor Mrs. Joan Lamb, on 9th October 1993.)
