A 1-year-old child was taken to Connecticut Children's Medical Center for observation after he was thrown from a car that crashed on Route 44 this afternoon.

The accident, which occurred at noon on Albany Avenue near Mountain Brook Road, shut down traffic on Avon Mountain for about five hours.

According to a police department press release, a Honda Civic traveling east collided with a Toyota Highlander driving west. Emergency personnel responding to the crash found the 1-year-old, conscious and crying, in the woods just off the road. The child had been ejected from the Honda, police said.

The child was taken to Hartford Hospital with a possible head injury, then transferred to the children's hospital after his medical status was downgraded to less a serious condition, Officer Manny Birritteri said. The child was being held at the hospital so doctors could observe him, Birritteri added.

"Initially he was brought to Hartford but then he was transferred to Children's because his condition improved,'' Birritteri said.

The driver of the Honda was identified as Tatyana Pikalova, 64, of West Hartford. She sustained an injured pelvis, among other possible injuries, and was taken to Hartford Hospital.

The driver of the Toyota, Laura Hammond, 48, of West Hartford, was treated at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center and released.

Because the investigation is ongoing, police did not say whether the child was in a car seat or whether the two drivers were wearing seat belts. Witnesses are asked to call Officer Birritteri at 860-523-2007.
