New Britain Mayor Timothy Stewart has been fighting for years in the trenches of partisan warfare as a Republican mayor up against a Democratic-dominated city council.
Stewart is expected to clash again with Phil Sherwood, a longtime political activist who is now the council leader.
"Phil Sherwood?'' Stewart asked in today's Hartford Courant. "He's a carpetbagger and a partisan hack. I don't like him and I don't respect him - never did and never will.''
Sherwood responded that New Britain is facing huge challenges and that compromises are needed. "I don't think we have to agree on everything, but we can be less suspicious of each other,'' Sherwood told The Courant.
