Cellphone calls are no exception. Calls outside the local calling area will still need a 1 before the area code,while local calls will require 10-digit dialing without the 1.

luckystreich: WTF? Your comment has absolutely nothing to do with this story at all, so why not just save your fingers and our eyes from your stupidity.
As to the story itself, I see no problem with this new system. It is inevitable when so many people have cell phones and landlines and fax machines that they would run out of numbers, creating the need for new area codes. When I lived in Dallas, Texas, we had to do the same thing. It's not a huge deal. Just reprogram your speed dials, or take the extra second to add three numbers at the start.
