  • 10/09/09 - 12:34PM ETPedro Martinez : Game 3 Starter
Martinez will start Game 3 of the NLDS for the Phillies, the team's official site reports.
He's pitched sporadically over the last month but will get the start since Joe Blanton and J.A. Happ both pitched on Thursday.
  • 10/09/09 - 9:15AM ETHuston Street : Notches Save Thursday
Street notched his first playoff save since 2006 in Thursday's win over the Phillies.
Although he held the Phils scoreless, he kept the intensity of the game up by allowing two base runners and two flyballs.
  • 10/09/09 - 8:56AM ETJohn Lackey : Thwarts Red Sox
Lackey allowed just four hits over 7.1 innings and picked up the win in the Angels' victory over the Red Sox in Game 1 of the ALDS on Thursday.
Lackey struck out four and walked just one in the game. He'll likely start Game 4 or 5, if necessary, or Game 1 of the ALCS should the Angels advance.
  • 10/09/09 - 8:52AM ETTorii Hunter : Three-Run Homer Keys Game 1 Win
Hunter hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning of Thursday's playoff opener against the Red Sox that gave the Angels the lead for good.
Hunter drilled a Jon Lester pitch to dead center to break open what was a scoreless game at the time.
  • 10/09/09 - 6:37AM ETBrandon Webb : Option Will Likely be Picked Up
D-Backs general managing partner Ken Kendrick said that the team will pick up Webb's $8.5 million option for 2010 unless "something very extraordinary occurs," the Arizona Republic reports.
A decision will come soon after the conclusion of the World Series, but Webb has already indicated that he'll test the free-agent waters (rather than immediately negotiate a smaller contract) if the D-Backs are unwilling to pick up his option.
  • 10/09/09 - 3:54AM ETPedro Martinez : Option for Game 3
Manager Charlie Manuel has not chosen a starter for Game 3 of the NLDS but Martinez is an option even though he hasn't pitched since Sept. 29, the Delaware News Journal reports.
Martinez hasn't been as good since throwing 130 pitches on Sept. 13 against the Mets, throwing a total of seven innings since. However, his big-game experience could persuade Manuel to give Pedro a start. "I've been there," Martinez said about pitching in big games in the postseason. "I've been everywhere."

  • 10/08/09 - 3:11PM ETChris Perez : Ankle Surgery
Perez had surgery to remove a loose bone and cyst from the back of his ankle, the Associated Press reports.
He should be able to do his usual offseason regimen in December and start spring training on time.
  • 10/08/09 - 3:10PM ETAsdrubal Cabrera : Elbow Surgery
Cabrera had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, the Associated Press reports.
Cabrera will begin therapy immediately, staying in Cleveland rather than returning home.
  • 10/08/09 - 2:53PM ETJoel Zumaya : (Shoulder) Won't Lose Velocity
General Manager Dave Dombrowski said Zumaya (shoulder) should have his trademark velocity when he returns to the mound next season, MLB.com reports.
Zumaya underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in August. It marked the third consecutive year Zumaya's season was ended prematurely due to injury. He'll be an injury risk once again, but he could be a favorite to land the closer gig if the Tigers don't re-sign Fernando Rodney this offseason.
  • 10/08/09 - 8:28AM ETCC Sabathia : Slows Down Twins
Sabathia held the Twins to two runs (one earned) in 6.2 innings Wednesday in Game 1 of the ALDS. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk.
Sabathia did exactly what the Yankees are paying him $161 million to do. It was the best (and longest) start of his postseason career, made possible in part because he didn't walk any batters after issuing an average of 4.4 free passes in his first five playoff games. Sabathia will next pitch in Game 4 at the Metrodome, if the series lasts that long.
  • 10/08/09 - 8:12AM ETAlex Rodriguez : Drives in Some Playoff Runs
Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Wednesday's Game 1 victory over the Twins.
A more relaxed Rodriguez put an end to his horrific playoff slump on Wednesday, hitting RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings. Entering his at-bat in the fifth, Rodriguez had zero hits in his last 29 postseason at-bats with men on base, stranding 40 consecutive runners since Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS.

  • 10/07/09 - 8:25AM ETJohn Lackey : Gets Game 1 Nod
Lackey will start Game 1 of the ALDS on Thursday against the Red Sox.
Lackey will face off against Boston starter Jon Lester in Los Angeles.
  • 10/07/09 - 4:27AM ETMike Lowell : Thumbs Up for Thursday
Lowell said his sore thumb has improved and is ready to go for the opening of the American League Division Series against the Angels on Thursday, the Boston Globe reports.
Lowell sprained his thumb and sat out the final two games of the regular season as a precaution.
  • 10/07/09 - 4:16AM ETBrad Lidge : Closer Not Named
Manager Charlie Manuel did not name a closer when asked who he would use to finish games during the playoffs, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
When asked who would close, Manuel said, "Whoever you see walking out there." The Phillies will likely choose from Lidge, Ryan Madson, J.A. Happ or Joe Blanton. A lot will depend on match-ups and how tight the games are.
