Connecticut will mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month with three events this week.

Mildred Muhammad, ex-wife of the "D.C. Sniper" and a survivor of domestic violence, will speak Thursday at 2 p.m. at Central Connecticut State University's Torp Theatre.

Sponsored by the Ruthe Boye Women's Center, Muhammad's talk, "Scared Silent," describes her suffering at the hands of John Allen Muhammad and her fear that he would find her and kill her. The event is free and open to the public.

In New Haven today, artists will paint a domestic violence-themed mural and engage in discussions with viewers about their experiences. The event, a collaboration between The Pink & Blue Arts for Violence Prevention Project and Channel 1 Gallery, will be held today at 220 State St. from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Young people from Channel 1's outreach program in New Haven will participate. The mural will be part of the set of "Testify — Real Stories, Real People," to be staged Oct. 23-24 at the Bregamos Community Theater, 315 Peck St., New Haven.

In Torrington, The Susan B. Anthony Domestic Violence Project will sponsor a candlelight vigil in Coe Park tonight at 6:30. The vigil will honor survivors and remember those who have lost their lives, organizers said. Families can share their stories in a portion of the event called "Speak Out."
