Should President Obama end the policy that bars openly gay men and women from serving in the U.S. military?

  • Yes. Most other countries allow gays to serve in their militaries with no problem.
  • No. The military's responsibilities are too serious for it to be the object of a social experiment.
  • Yes. Don't ask, don't tell is institutionalized discrimination; ending it is a matter of equality and justice.
  • No. The president should leave these kinds of decisions to military leaders.

President Obama pledged during his campaign to end the policy that bars openly gay men and women from serving in the U.S. military. He reiterated that pledge Saturday. More than 10,000 men and women have been discharged from the military in the past dozen years under the policy. Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, who sits on the Armed Services Committee, is in talks with the White House on repealing the policy. Opponents of the policy say it is both discriminatory and unnecessary; most other countries allow gays to serve in their militaries. Supporters of keeping the policy say that gays serving openly would harm military cohesion and morale. What's your view?
