HARTFORD — - Felix was at his job as a pizza deliveryman when he got a call from his wife at about 2 a.m. today. She heard gunfire in their Whitmore Street neighborhood, and she heard a woman screaming, said Felix, who asked that his last name not be published.

An hour later, police tape kept Felix from getting to his home. There were two bodies: One in the street near a curb and another in the grass, he said.

Police said this afternoon they were called to the area of 51 Whitmore St. about 2 a.m. for a report of shots fired. When they arrived they found two people had been shot, a man and a woman, in front of 44 Whitmore St. Both died at the scene in what was apparently a drive-by shooting, police said.

Family members at the scene identified the woman as 23-year-old Leida "Flaka" Franqui. Police did not confirm the woman's name.

Investigators are looking for two male suspects, one tall, one heavyset, police said. They said a burgundy or red Honda or Toyota might have been involved.

The double fatal shooting marks the sixth since the beginning of October and the third and fourth homicides in the city in five days. There have been 30 homicides in the city so far this year, compared with 32 for all of 2008.

About 1:15 a.m. Saturday, police responded to Wethersfield Avenue for a report of a person shot. They found Michael Alvarado in front of 594 Wethersfield Ave., suffering from a gunshot wound. Medics pronounced him dead at 1:28 a.m., police said.

At about 7:20 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a report of a person shot at 45 Mahl Ave. They found a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. A preliminary investigation revealed that two masked gunmen shot him and chased him into the home and left out the back door, they said.

As for today's double homicide on Whitmore Street, Felix said he is "not really" surprised.

"Things happen around here all the time" he said.

A convenience store clerk at the nearby Select Sunoco gas station also said that the neighborhood at times is dangerous.

The store is open all night, he said, but he keeps the front door locked in the early-morning hours, only allowing customers he recognizes inside.

Anyone with information about any of the shootings is asked to call Sgt. Rob Davis of the Hartford police Major Crimes Division at 860-757-4256 or the Hartford Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 860-722-8477.
