MIDDLETOWN - A Massachusetts man accused of fatally shooting a Wesleyan University student last May had his case continued until Oct. 20 today in Superior Court.

Stephen P. Morgan, 29, of Marblehead, Mass., appeared in Superior Court in Middletown where his attorney told the judge he wanted access to documents relating to evidence seized in the case.

Morgan charged with murder in the May 6 shooting of Johanna Justin-Jinich, 21, of Timnath, Colo., in the cafe at Broad Street Books near Wesleyan. He is accused of shooting her several times in the head and body. Court records say he walked into the café in the afternoon wearing a disguise, shot Justin-Jinich with a 9mm semiautomatic pistol and shed his disguise before police arrived.

Today, a shaved Morgan, who now has short-cropped hair, waved and smiled at his father, who was sitting in the gallery.

Richard Brown, Morgan's attorney, said police seized a number of electronic items during the investigation of the shooting. Those items are currently being reviewed at the state police forensic laboratory. Brown said test results on some of that evidence are pending, but that there is a "backlog" at the lab.

The attorney said the evidence includes a laptop computer found in Morgan's car the day of the shooting, among other items.

The afternoon shooting in May prompted a nearly two-day campus lockdown and nationwide search for Morgan, who, according to a New York City police report, threatened Justin-Jinich in 2007, when they attended a New York University summer program.

After the shooting, investigators found a journal they believe belonged to Morgan that contained writings about a killing spree targeting Jewish people and "beautiful and smart" Wesleyan students, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Morgan turned himself in the night after the shooting after public pleas from his family to surrender.
