History

Established in 1935, theCollege opened with a freshman class of only 22 members. Dr. Emilio Javier was its first Dean and together with Atty. Felix G. Gaudiel, composed the faculty. In 1937, the entire four-year course was offered. Marcos Calo, who later became the congressman of Agusan became the first law graduate in 1938. He passed the Bar exams that same year and gave Silliman its first taste of a 100% bar success. The first class of 1940 gave the College its first woman Graduate in 1941, it produced first magna cum laude graduate in the person of Artemio Arrieta. However Mr. Arrieta did not take the board that same year. But Oscar Victoriano, class salutatorian evened up the loss by getting 3rd. Place in the Bar Exams that year with a rating of 89.55%. Today, the Silliman University College of Law stands proud more than ever. Guided by its battlecry, LAW WITH A CONSCIENCE, the College “seeks to teach its students not just the correct undertanding of legal provisions and principles but their ethical implementation to society and people..” Suffice to say, for the 10 year period 1978-1987, the College was ranked No. 7 by DECS among 57 law schools throughout the country. For 1988 to 1992, the school ranked No. 10 among 63 law schools with a curriculum based on the Model Law Curriculum developed by Philippine Association of Law Schools approved by College continues to set its sight higher year after year.
