Why Indians dumped Pavano on Twins

Carl Pavano is the seventh big-league player the Indians have traded since June 27 in a massive housecleaning/salary dump to try and offset the $16 million in losses Indians President Paul Dolan says the club will suffer this year. The turnover has been so great that there are only four players left on the 25-man roster from Opening Day who have not been traded, sent to the minors or placed on the disabled list. The four are Kelly Shoppach, Kerry Wood, Jhonny Peralta and Shin-Soo Choo. GM Mark Shapiro said Pavano's trade let the Indians concentrate on developing the rotation for next year and beyond. He said Carlos Carrasco and Hector Rondon could get looks before the season is over.

This went down because the Twins were stupid enough to agree to take him. Pavano is SO done.

I wouldn't say the Twins were dumb...desperate maybe. Their starting pitching has been a huge disappointment, especially Liriano. As inconsistent as Pavano has been he's an upgrade over a couple of the Twins starters.

Man, that's bad when Pavano is an upgrade over anything. I hear you about Liriano, though. A few years ago this guy looked like one of if not the best up-and-coming pitchers in all of baseball. I don't know if it was the surgery or what, but what happened?!

August 8, 2009  10:32 AM ET

Yeah he had the Tommy John surgery I think...they say that it takes a guy a year or two to come back fully from that. If he can get back to 75% of what he was pre-surgery I'd be happy!

"why indians dumped pavano..."

BECAUSE HE SUCKS

I hope he has a little left in the tank, but I'm afraid you are probably right. He starts today against the Tigers and he's been pretty good against them.

August 8, 2009  11:00 AM ET

Pavano's better then the 2 guys the Yankees picked up (Russ Ortiz and some stiff with a 5 ERA in SanDiego). He would have gotten lynched in NY but he's still better then those two.
I'm going to go to the bathroom and take a Pavano.

August 8, 2009  11:25 AM ET

Didn't he pull a muscle in his butt getting out of his SUV while on the DL for the Yankees and miss like 5 extra months because of it? Come on who needs anyone who does that

August 8, 2009  12:11 PM ET

As everyone knows, Pavano owns the AL Central this year. He will be a Tiger killer for the Twins. Great move!

August 8, 2009  12:24 PM ET

That's a disgusting headline.

August 8, 2009  01:56 PM ET

Who took a dump on who?

August 8, 2009  03:16 PM ET

The Indians dropped a Cleveland Steamer on the Twins.

Will the Twins take Livian Hernandez & or Tim Redding?

August 8, 2009  07:26 PM ET

I say "if it's broke, fix it or trade the deadwood" !!! I hope Cleveland is back in contention in a year or two or three !!!

August 8, 2009  08:56 PM ET

Good move for Cleveland. Pick up a guy off the scrap heap and trade him for a younger prospect. I about screamed when I heard that the Tribe signed Pavano. It looks like the "Cash for Clunkers" program is alive & well in MLB.

August 8, 2009  09:20 PM ET

His ERA Vs. the Tigers is under 2.0. The Twins have a bunch of games left Vs. the Tigers....

August 8, 2009  10:38 PM ET

Pavano just threw seven shutout innings against the Tigers.

This is why it was good pick-up for the Twins. They could still make a run for it, considering 88 wins will likely take the AL Central.

One trade I'm not unhappy about at all. Like DeRosa, Pavano was a hired gun to help the Indians fill out thier rotation and maybe compete. Even though the compete part didn't happen, he actaully performed better than the rest of the team, so getting something for him is a good deal . Helps both teams, espceailly if the Twins take the division, or at least stay competetive down the sretch and draw more fans. .
