Red Sox-Padres trade still in play
There were indications late last night that trade talks between the Padres and Red Sox concerning first baseman Adrian Gonzalez were still active and would likely peak today before the trade deadline. Padres GM Kevin Towers was said to be asking for "a ton" for Gonzalez according to one major league source familiar with the Padres' thinking. Some of the names being discussed included Clay Buchholz, Lars Anderson, Jed Lowrie, Ryan Westmoreland, Justin Masterson and others, but no word on whether the Red Sox had offered a package for Gonzalez.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I just can't seeing the Padres letting go of Adrian. I definitely can't see WHY they would let him go, at least. That lineup would be pretty underwhelming if Gonzalez leaves.

Also how many 1st basemen do the red Sox need? Youkilis, Ortiz (kind of), maybe Gonzalez? One more and they could have an entire infield of 1st basemen.

If Towers lets him go, that's pretty stupid. Gonzalez's contract is structured in such a way that he may be the best bargain in the majors. He is only due a little over $4 mil next year, and a little over $5 mil in 2011.....an All Star 1st baseman for around $10 mil for 3 years? That's a bargain. They really need pitching help....but then again, so does most every other team.

Send Gonzalez back to the Marlins....and we'll take the Padre closer, Bell, also.

Ortiz will DH, Youkilis used to play 3B, so he'd move back, Gonzalez would play 1B, and Lowell would be gone. Not sure what type of money he has left on his contract (1 yr, maybe 12 million in 2010 and that's it?)

Dont think the Padres will part with Gonzo but if they do there will be some kind of three-way deal due to 1B glut. Theo should have gone after Jack Wilson to solve the SS problem....270 lifetime hitter and the dude can throw some leather

The Red Sux cheated. Just like the Patriots. The championships should not be recognized.
Boston fans are hypocrits.

You mean it wasn't fair when the redsox beat the Yankees in the ALCS? The Yankees only had Arod, Pettite, Clemens, Giambi, and god knows who else all on the juice.
Just because two players names were leaked doesn't mean many of the other teams players were playing fair and square.
Same goes for the Pats, other teams coaches have pretty much said they did the same thing but they didn't have Mangina pointing the finger at them.

Boston is terribly corupt. I guess this explains how Ted Kennedy keeps getting re-elected.

Seeing as Lugo just got jettisoned with 13M left, I think they're okay with that as long as they get noticably better.

In 2003 it wasn't illegal for steroids to be used in baseball. They were illegal on the streets though. I have defended A-Rod for this (as a Sox fan) and now I will defend Ortiz for it. (not Manny, he was caught this year using PEDs)

Well, let me rephrase that. Steroids were banned back in the early 90s, however, not until 2003-04 AFTER the ANONYMOUS testing, a drug policy was put in place. And of course, early this year, the new policy was put in place.
