A small but cosy abode

I am pleased to hear that the City of Vancouver has approved laneway houses to ease the need for inexpensive housing. This brings back memories of red CPR freight cars converted to housing in the alleys...

Recently, I noticed a car weaving from lane to lane and occasionally into the oncoming lane. I assumed the driver was experiencing a health problem or was drunk.

Banning the use of cellphones while driving is not going to solve the carnage on our roads. There is only one way to avoid accidents: Practise defensive driving.

The view from above Toba Inlet isn't encouraging

Maclean's magazine recently listed Plutonic Power as one of Canada's most socially responsible corporations for providing sustainable, low-impact hydroelectric projects in coastal B.C., with public consultation.

B.C.'s sockeye is going the way of East Coast cod

How disappointing to read that at the height of the four-year sockeye salmon cycle, the Pacific Salmon Commission warns that only one-third of the summer sockeye run is expected (July 27).

Aid is available to post-secondary students

I'd like to set the record straight on student financial assistance in British Columbia. B.C. continues to have one of the most generous financial aid programs in Canada. If qualified students need financial help, they will get it.

Review failed to capture fun of the festival

I'd like to comment on Graeme McRanor's depressing review of last weekend's Virgin Festival in Deer Lake Park (July 27). I was there both days.

Less sexy but more important

I couldn't care less that Jillian Harris, TV's The Bachelorette, has chosen her mate (July 28). What concerns me is that the Howe Street HEAT homeless shelter is about to close, leaving 40 residents out on the street. That should be front-page news.

HST will make our exports more competitive

Rory Fader (Letters, July 28) is not correct when he writes, "Only the final retail sale of the finished product is subject to the payment of PST." In fact, there is $1.9 billion of provincial sales tax annually built into the cost of goods and services in B.C. before they get to the consumer.

HST will make our exports more competitive

In view of the B.C. Liberal Party's comments on tax harmonization during the recent election, the introduction of the HST is an affront. I fear that the increased tax on many current PST-exempt items could have a significant negative impact on many organizations.

Community service in lieu of fines for the city's poorest?

Re: Amnesty for being poor means no penalty for lousy citizenship, July 27

If anything, climate change predictions understate the case

I was disappointed to read Jonathan Manthorpe's July 28 column, "Global warming is the new religion of First World urban elites." It is unworthy of a distinguished foreign affairs reporter.

Sex worker's death highlights the need for safety van

Lisa Arlene Francis was a daughter and a mother, caught in the web of addiction and the survival sex trade, hoping that tomorrow would hold a brighter future. Sadly, those hopes came to an end when her dead body was found floating in the Fraser River.
