Genealogy Research
The Library of Michigan will have new hours effective July 7:
10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Saturday.
ClosedThe Library of Michigan will be closed Friday, July 24
State Offices Will Be Closed to Accommodate Unpaid Furlough Days for State Employees
Additional days the Library will be closed are:
Friday, Aug. 7
Friday, Aug. 21
Friday, Sept. 4 through Monday, Sept. 7 (holiday)

New hours for the main library effective July 7, 2009: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Saturday

Genealogy Research at the Library of Michigan and the Archives of Michigan
Genealogy research at the Michigan Library and Historical CenterThe Michigan Library and Historical Center offers a wide range of family history research materials. Please note, the Library and the Archives of Michigan have different hours. The Library will be open 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday starting July 7.
This Web page has information about conducting genealogy research and using the Library and Historical Center, as well as links to online research tools you may use from anywhere with an Internet connection. Please explore the links in the left rail or below, and be sure to contact us with any questions.

Visitor Parking Lot Changes Effective April 20

Visitor parking is $1 an hour with a maximum of $8 a day. There are two pay stations, one at the parking lot vehicle exit and one in between the double doors of the south entrance of the Michigan Library and Historical Center. The machines accepts $1, $5, $10 and $20 and will provide change. Payment is CASH ONLY.

 

Join the Michigan Genealogy Group on Facebook
The Library of Michigan has created a group called Michigan Genealogy on Facebook.

Facebook offers a wonderful opportunity to keep in touch with friends, family and the genealogy community. Members of the Michigan Genealogy group are keeping each other informed about family history events statewide and chatting about genealogy resources. Please join us!

The 1870 federal census for Michigan provides a list of the family names in each household in every county and township in Michigan in 1870. View and download images of the census pages.

Michigan Cemetery Sources: www.michigan.gov/cemeteries
Michigan Cemetery Sources represents a compilation of published cemetery transcriptions located at the Library of Michigan. It also identifies the location of more than 3,700 cemeteries in Michigan. It is not intended to include personal names.

Michigan County Clerks Directory
County clerk offices maintain public records of great interest to genealogists. The Archives of Michigan has compiled contact information and genealogy research details for each Michigan county clerk.

Michigan Naturalization Record Indexes
Indexes to the naturalization records for 29 Michigan counties are online in PDF format. Researchers may request copies of naturalization records from the Archives of Michigan.

Michigan Newspapers
A list of Michigan newspapers on microfilm at the Library of Michigan. The list is organized by county, and a date range is given for each newspaper.

Researching Mackinac History
Mackinac State Historic Parks has three main research areas: Peterson Center for Archaeology and History, Photo Collections and Archaeological and Historical Collections Research.
