Ghana skipper to earn his Spurs

by Tom Adams , 06 January 2009

Ghana captain Stephen Appiah is training with Tottenham Hotspur as he looks to earn a move to the North London club.

Appiah is available on a free transfer having settled a contract dispute with former club Fenerbahce that saw him leave the Turkish club in August.

Redknapp is a long-term admirer of the midfielder having watched him for his country for some time and admitted his interest in Appiah when manager of Portsmouth last season.

The player’s wage demands precluded any deal at the time but, now installed in the more lucrative surroundings of White Hart Lane, Redknapp has hinted that a deal is in the offing.

"He had a bit of a problem with his knee but he is fine now - he's fit and looks okay,” said Redknapp. “If he is fit he's a terrific player.

"He is going to train with us and we'll have a chat and see what the deal is.

"I watched him an awful lot for Ghana - about six times - but I ended up taking Sulley Muntari because Juventus were asking £14 million for Appiah."
