Tiger Woods's Memorial winning clubs

Posted at 7:33 PM by David Dusek

Tiger-Woods-Nike-Golf-Clubs Tiger Woods made a significant driver adjustment at Memorial. He switched to a 10° driver and proceeded to hit 87% of the fairways for the week. On Sunday, Woods was perfect off the tee, hitting all 14 fairways.

Woods did not change the shaft in his driver, or his golf ball, so the added loft should have created more backspin and lift on his drives. Woods said the change caused a slight sacrifice in distance, but he still averaged 298.4 yards per tee shot.

Here is a complete list of the clubs Woods used to win at the Memorial.

Driver:  Nike SQ Dymo (10°) with a Mitsubishi Diamana White Board 83x shaft
Fairway woods:  Nike SasQuatch Sumo (15°, 19°) with Mitsubishi Diamana Blue Board 103g shafts
Irons:   Nike Forged Blades (3-PW) with True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shafts
Wedges:  Nike Victory Red (56°), SV (60°) with True Temper Dynamic Gold S400 shafts

Rory Sabbatini's HP Byron Nelson winning clubs

Posted at 9:55 PM by David Dusek

Rory-Sabbatini Rory Sabbatini has played with golf equipment made by several manufacturers over the past few seasons, but on March 13 he signed a new endorsement deal with TaylorMade. His win at the HP Byron Nelson Championship was his first using the company's gear.

The win was also the first for the new UST ProForce AXIVCore green shaft. The shaft was released last week and is designed for players who want a lower launch angle and penetrating ball flight. Like other AXIVCore shafts, it has high-modulus graphite woven in different directions within the shaft for a more consistent feel and greater stability.

Here is a complete list of the clubs in Sabbatini's bag:

DRIVER:                   TaylorMade R9 (9.5°) with UST ProForce AXIVCore Green 66X shaft
FARIWAY WOOD:    TaylorMade Tour Burner (14.5°,19°)
HYBRID:                    Adams Idea Pro Gold (21°)
IRONS:                     TaylorMade Tour Preferred (4-PW)
WEDGES:                 TaylorMade RAC (56°, 60°)
PUTTER:                   Rossa Monza Daytona Kia Ma

Zach Johnson's Texas Open winning clubs

Posted at 10:29 PM by David Dusek

Zach-Johnson-Winning-Clubs_450x600 Zach Johnson doesn't overpower golf courses. His strength is getting the ball into the fairway and setting up his short irons and wedges. It's that strategy that won him the 2007 Masters, so above everything else, Johnson knows that he needs to maintain control.

So when I saw him testing and comparing his old Titleist Pro V1x ball with Titleist's new Pro V1x at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, I stopped and observed. Although he had tested the new Pro V1x in the off-season, Johnson won the Sony Open in Hawaii in January using the 2007 version of the Pro V1x.

"Someone said they spun it more," he told the Titleist tour reps on the range in Tucson. "Not with the driver, but with the irons."

Taking dead aim at a flag that was about 127 yards away, Johnson hit one pitching wedge after another as the technicians gathered launch monitor data. Each shot was tracked and averages were compiled, but shots that Zach mis-hit were taken out of consideration.

What Johnson found was that with the pitching wedge, his launch angle and ball speed were identical using the old and new Pro V1x. For a control player considering a change, that news must have been comforting.

Johnson is still playing the 2007 version of the Pro V1x, but without testing his decision would have been based on feel and guesswork. Unfortunately, that's exactly how many amateur golfers make equipment decisions. Be smart, like the pros, and take the time to get professionally fitted for your equipment.

Here is a complete list of the clubs used by Zach Johnson to win the Valero Texas Open.

Driver                         Titleist 909D2 (8.5°) with Mitsubishi Diamana Blue Board 73 shaft
Fairway woods         Titleist 909F2 (13.5°) with Mitsubishi Diamana White Board 73 and (18.5°) with Fujikura ZCOM Pro95 shaft
Hybrid                        Titleist 909H (21°) with Fujikura Speeder 904HB shaft
Irons                          Titleist AP2 (4-9) with True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts
Wedges                     Titleist Vokey Design (48°), Vokey prototype (54°), Vokey 60 V (60°) with True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts
Putter                         SeeMore FGP

Henrik Stenson's Winning Clubs

Posted at 10:23 AM by David Dusek

Henrik-Stenson It's a tradition at the Players Championship for the winner to donate a club to be mounted on the wall inside the Sawgrass clubhouse. After leading the field in driving accuracy last year, Sergio Garcia handed over his TaylorMade Burner driver.

The most appropriate club for Henrik Stenson to donate would be his 2004 Big Bertha 3-wood. He used the club frequently off the tee and hit 73% of the fairways.

"It’s a course that sets up nicely for my 3-wood," Stenson said.  "I didn't hit many drivers here this week, and I don't think I really had to."

One of the longest hitters on the European Tour, Stenson hit several 3-woods more than 300 yards. On the par-4 15th hole Sunday, he hit the 3-wood 302 yards — without a tee.

"It's 13 degrees, and I hit it far," he said jokingly Sunday evening. "I hit a good one down 18 the other day, and I think [ShotLink] said 318 or 313 or something like that. When you get one going on these fast, firm fairways, it can run on."

Stenson said his stock 3-wood typically flies 270.

Here is a complete list of the clubs Stenson used ton win the Players:
DRIVER:                      Callaway FT-3 (9.5°) with Grafolloy Blue shaft
FAIRWAY WOODS:     Callaway Big Bertha (13°, 19°) with Grafolloy Blue shafts
IRONS:                        Srixon I-506 (3-PW)
WEDGES:                    Callaway X Tour Vintage (52°, 58°)
PUTTER:                      Yes! Donna
BALL:                          Srixon Z-Star

Sean O'Hair's Winning Clubs

Posted at 7:41 PM by David Dusek

Sean O'Hair Quail Hallow During the CBS television broadcast, announcers noted that Sean O'Hair failed to make a putt longer than 10 feet all week at the Quail Hallow Championship. But O'Hair won thanks to outstanding ballstriking — he finished the week third in greens in regulation (75%); seventh in average driving distance (312 yards); and tied for 19th in driving accuracy (51.8%).

O'Hair is also the third player to win on the PGA Tour this season using TaylorMade's new R9 driver (Brian Gay/Verizon Heritage, Pat Perez/Bob Hope Classic).

Here is a complete list of the clubs in O'Hair's bag:

DRIVER:                      TaylorMade R9 (10.5°) with Mitsubishi Diamana Blue Board 74 shaft
FAIRWAY WOODS:    TaylorMade R9 (13°) with Mitsubishi Diamana Blue Board 83 shaft; r7 TP (17.5°) with Mitsubishi Fubuki Tour shaft
IRONS:                        TaylorMade Tour Preferred (4-9)
WEDGES:                    TaylorMade RAC (48°, 50°, 54°), Cleveland CG 12 (60°)

Jerry Kelly's Zurich Classic Winning Clubs

Posted at 7:27 PM by David Dusek

Singh-Driver-Shaft Jerry Kelly put a new Miyazaki prototype shaft into his Cleveland Launcher driver this week before the start of the Zurich Classic. Michael Jolly, a tour rep for Cleveland Golf, told me in Augusta two weeks ago that Vijay Singh has also put the shaft in his driver.

Jolly told me that the Miyazaki shaft is very rigid and resists twisting to help fast-swinging players maintain control on slightly off-center hits. However, "unlike a lot of low torque shafts, it doesn't feel harsh," he said.

It's not available in retail now, but Jolly said SRI (Cleveland's parent company) may release it in the future.

Here is a complete list of the clubs in Jerry Kelly's bag:

DRIVER:                  Cleveland Launcher (7.5°) with Miyazaki prototype X shaft
FAIRWAY WOOD:   Titleist 906 F4 (13°) with Graphite Design Pershing 85g X shaft
HYBRID:                  Cleveland HiBore XLS (16°) with Graphite Design YS Hybrid 85 X
IRONS:                    Cleveland CG7 Tour (3-9) with True Temper Black Gold X shafts
WEDGES:
               Cleveland 588 (47°, 53°, 60°) with True Temper Dynamic Gold S-400 shafts
PUTTER:                 Cleveland Classic #3
BALL:                     Titleist Pro V1x (2009)

Brian Gay's Winning Clubs

Posted at 8:31 AM by David Dusek

Brian Gay Driver Brian Gay used clubs from four different companies last week to win the Verizon Heritage on Hilton Head Island.

Gay switched from a TaylorMade r7 425 TP driver early this season to a TaylorMade R9. The move has not transformed Gay into the second coming of Bubba Watson (the Tour's perennial leader in driving distance), but it has made Gay, always a straight shooter, even straighter. In 2008 he hit 71.74% of the fairways; this year he's up to 74.26%, the fourth best percentage on the PGA Tour.

Gay uses three different types of Mizuno irons, all of which have been on the market for a few years. His MX 900 3- and 4-irons are classic perimeter-weighted, game-improvement clubs. His MP 60 middle irons were a Testers' Top Pick in GOLF Magazine's 2005 ClubTest. The "Cut Muscle" design and moderate perimeter weighting move the center of gravity slightly lower, creating blade-like feel and a mid-trajectory ball flight. Finally, Gay's MP 32 short irons are blades designed for maximum control and feel.

Here is a complete list of the clubs Brian Gay had in his bag at Harbour Town Golf Links:

Driver:                 TaylorMade R9 (9.5°) with Mitsubishi Diamona Blue Board shaft
Fairway wood:   Tour Edge Exotics CB2 (13°) with Mitsubishi Diamona Blue Board 83 shaft
Hybrid:                Mizuno CLK Fli-Hi (20°) with Aldila NV Hybrid 85 shaft
Irons:                  Mizuno MX 900 (3,4); MP 60 (5-8); MP 32 (9, PW)
Wedges:             Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled (56°, 59°)
Putter:                 Mizuno Bettinardi prototype
Ball:                     Titleist Pro V1 (2009)

Cabrera becomes first Ping player to win Masters

Posted at 11:07 PM by David Dusek

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Ping Golf received a huge 50th anniversary present on Sunday evening. At 7:32 Eastern time, Trevor Immelman slipped a green jacket on Angel Cabrera in Butler Cabin at Augusta National.

Cabrera becomes the first Ping staff player to ever win a Masters title.

As is tradition, Ping will now make a solid gold replica of the putter Cabrera used to win the tournament, and place it in a vault in the company's Scottsdale headquarters. This video gives you an inside look into the vault.

PING_Tour_Wedge60TS Cabrera's i-Series 1/2 Craz-E putter tips the scales at 385 grams. With the current price of gold at $879 an ounce, that's $27,249 worth of bling!

Cabrera also had a new lob wedge in the bag at Augusta. Ping's new Tour W TS wedge (Thin Sole) is just arriving in pro shops. It is designed to provide players with the ability to hit better shots off thin, tight lies. Like other Tour W wedges, the TS has a tungsten toe weight and a small thermoplastic urethane insert to increase the moment of inertia and enhance feel.

Once again, here is a complete list of all the clubs in Cabrera's bag at the Masters:

Driver:                Rapture (7.5°)
Fairway wood:  Rapture V2 (15.5°)
Irons:                 G10 (2), S57 (3-PW)
Wedges:             Ping Tour-W (54°),  Tour W TS (60°)
Putter:                i Series 1/2 Craz-E B
