There are so many options for exploring and enjoying Jewish life at Pitt! Below are links to the Jewish organizations at the University.

 


Brotherhood

Brotherhood is run by Jewish guys for Jewish guys, with a variety of programs that include a weekly poker night, monthly “badass movie night,” Jewish cooking for men, discussions on sex and ethics, themed Shabbat dinners, comedy nights, and other opportunities for boys to be boys.


Chabad House on Campus

Chabad House is a Jewish student organization that provides an array of social, educational, and cultural programming for students; a home where all Jews are welcome, regardless of background or affiliation; a place to socialize in a comfortable, home-like setting with great friends, great food, and great discussion; an outlet to ask questions in a non-judgmental environment; a center for prayer and study, where one can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of his or her Jewish heritage.


Chai’r Learning

Chai’r Learning is the University of Pittsburgh’s outreach to Jewish prospective students. You can make a major impact on your university and fellow students by helping the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid with this effort.


First Year Students of Hillel (FYSH)

The FYSH Committee is the perfect for opportunity for Jewish first year students to come together and create programs and activities designed specifically for freshmen. These range from social to spiritual, and cultural to educational, with an emphasis on fun!


Greek Organizations


Hillel JUC Pitt Student Board

The Hillel JUC Pitt Student Board is comprised of Jewish students across years and areas of study who have been elected by fellow students to represent them and conceive, promote, bring to fruition, and lead social, cultural, educational, and religious programs for Jewish students. The Hillel JUC Pitt Student Board is always eager to receive your input, so contact the board by clicking here.


Jewish Greek Council (JGC)

The Jewish Greek Council is comprised of Jewish fraternity brothers and sorority sisters who represent their organizations and collaborate to create Jewish social, cultural, educational, and religious experiences specifically for Jewish Greeks. The JGC serves Jewish students who are in official Jewish and non-Jewish Greek organizations.


Jewish Heritage Programs (JHP)

The goal of JHP is to help students create peer-to-peer based Jewish identity programming geared toward unaffiliated students. Under guidance from Chabad on Campus, JHP offers yet another alternative for getting involved jewishly on campus in Pittsburgh.


Jewish Studies Program @ Pitt

The Jewish Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh is the only academic program offering courses in Jewish Studies in all of western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. At the University of Pittsburgh, students may construct a self-designed undergraduate major in Jewish Studies, complete a certificate program in Jewish Studies, study the Hebrew language in order to attain full conversational proficiency, or take a number of interesting and challenging courses that will expand and complement their studies while also satisfying one of the University’s Disciplinary Approaches requirements. In addition, there is also a Masters Degree and a Phd in Jewish studies available at Pitt.


KESHER – Connecting Reform Jews on Campus

KESHER, Hebrew for “connection,” is the campus program of the Union for Reform Judaism. KESHER serves Reform Jews and supports Reform chavurot (groups) on campuses through partnerships with all Reform congregations, Hillel, and other campus organizations such as the Israel on Campus Coalition. KESHER also consults with Union congregations and summer camps, as well as campus-based Hillel professionals, to help them meet the needs of Reform college students.


Kosher Food on Campus – at Eddie’s and Schenley Café

Panthers for Israel

Panthers for Israel is a student Zionist organization dedicated to educating the Pitt community about Israel. Panthers for Israel provides a wide array of cultural and political programs that are open to all students, faculty and staff at Pitt.


Religious Education

The Religious Education Committee creates exciting programs that blend spiritual exploration with social experiences. Events are often held in an intimate setting, which allows for an easy-going, warm and welcoming atmosphere.


Session: Middle East

Session: Middle East is an organization designed to engage young people to tackle conflicts in non-violent and diplomatic ways. This is an entirely student-initiated and student-run organization. The mission is to find innovative ways to approach the Arab-Israeli conflict in ways that humanize rather than brusquely ignore “the other.” This is done through documentary viewings, cultural events, panel discussions, speakers, and an annual forum. The organization’s region of focus is the Middle East, but the methods used can be universally applied.


Shabbat and Holidays

The Shabbat and Holidays Committee collaborates with Hillel JUC staff to create pluralistic, vibrant celebrations throughout the Jewish calendar year. Two of the key responsibilities of the Shabbat and Holidays Committee are working with other students to create themes for Shabbat dinners and helping to set up for Shabbat services and dinner.


Sisterhood

Sisterhood is run by Jewish women for Jewish women, with richly diverse programs ranging from the popular, monthly “Of Mind & Body” Series to special comedy events, and from kayaking at Point State Park to fondue-fueled girls nights. Sisterhood collaborates with other women’s groups in the community and helps to organize themed Shabbat dinners.


Social Justice

The Social Justice Committee builds awareness of important issues around the world and educates students about these topics through dynamic programs, including trips to Washington, D.C., internationally renowned speakers, and visual interactive displays.


STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition

The local chapter of STAND is part of a growing national network of student activists who use political means, speakers, presentations, and letter-writing to end genocides around the world, with a particular focus on Darfur. Pitt’s chapter of STAND was co-founded by two Jewish students, and many of the group’s leaders and members are Jewish.


Twenty-somethings And Graduate Students (TAG)

TAG is a collaborative venture of the Hillel JUC and Shalom Pittsburgh (a project of  the United Jewish Federation  of Pittsburgh), designed to serve the approximately 2,500 Jewish graduate students and young professionals in Pittsburgh between ages 21 and 30. TAG goals include social get-togethers, career networking opportunities and a whole array of programs designed to promote a diverse Jewish community based on the varied interests of twenty-somethings in Pittsburgh.


VoKols

Pittsburgh’s premier Hebrew and American pop a cappella group.
