Refund Policy
- NJ TRANSIT does not issue refunds for one-way, round-trip, round-trip excursion, and rail off-peak round-trip tickets.
- Ticket agents/sellers will refund 10-trip tickets, only if a complete set of ten wholly unused
tickets is presented. A maximum of one set will be refunded at any one time. Ticket agents/sellers
will refund 10-trip tickets in cash if the conditions listed below are met:
- Tickets were purchased with cash.
- Tickets were sold by an NJ TRANSIT ticket agent/seller or issued by an NJ TRANSIT ticket vending machine.
Bus tickets sold by a commissioned ticket agent must be presented for refund at the location where originally purchased.
- Ticket sellers will complete a "Refund/Exchange" form for each refund.
- Ticket sellers will request identification from the applicant to verify his/her name and record the type of
identification accepted on the "Refund/Exchange" form. Acceptable forms of identification are the same forms acceptable for
personal checks: driver's license, state-issued non-driver's ID, photo ID (various), a major credit card, or a passport.
- All other refund requests must be sent to the applicable address as follows:

- For mail refund requests, the following will apply:
- 10-Trip Tickets
- The following wholly unused tickets will be refunded at the purchase price:
- Bus, rail, and HBLR 10-trip tickets.
Note: Rail 10-trip tickets will be refunded as long as all individual parts of all
the trips are submitted for refund and have not been punched.
- For the following tickets that have been used, the applicable one-way fare will be deducted from the purchase price for each fare/portion used:
- Bus, rail, and HBLR 10-trip tickets. Rail 10-trip tickets will be refunded as long as all individual parts of the
trip(s) are submitted for refund and have not been punched.
- Weekly and monthly passes
The date of the refund request will be deemed to be the postmark date on the envelope used to request the refund.
- Weekly and monthly passes submitted before the start of the validity period will be refunded at the purchase price.
- Weekly and monthly passes submitted after the start of the validity period will have two full one-way fares deducted
from the purchase price for each business day from the start of the validity period to the date of the refund request.
- Magnetically-Encoded Newark Airport Tickets/Passes
- Newark Airport one-way tickets are not refundable.

For magnetically-encoded Newark Airport ten-trip tickets, the applicable one-way rail fare and discounted AirTrain access fee will be deducted from the purchase price for each ticket used.

Magnetically-encoded Newark Airport monthly passes submitted after the start of the validity period will have two full one-way rail fares deducted from the purchase price for each business day from the start of the validity period to the date of the refund request (the access fee for monthly passes has been eliminated).
- HBLR monthly parking permits
- HBLR monthly parking permits will be refunded at the
purchase price if submitted before the start of the validity period (12:00 a.m. on the first day of the calendar month).
- HBLR monthly parking permits submitted after the start of the validity period will have the full daily parking rate
deducted for each business day from the start of the validity period to the date of the refund request.
- Refund checks will be mailed to customers within six weeks from the day that the Refund Department receives the request.
- Tickets that have been validated for use in a "proof-of-payment" fare collection system will not be refunded.
- For credit card sales, refunds will be issued as credits to customer credit card accounts wherever possible.
- For debit card sales, refunds will be issued in the form of an NJ TRANSIT check.
- Courtesy tickets will not be refunded and may not be used as a credit toward the purchase of a ticket.
- One-way fares will not be refunded if purchased and used because passengers did not have their weekly or monthly passes with
them at the time of travel.
