Departing flights From Newark Liberty International Airport

Taking the Train to the Airport

From Manhattan and Points in New Jersey:

  1. Where to Start
Look on a Northeast Corridor or North Jersey Coast Line timetable and find the station closest to you. To locate departure and arrival times, refer to the timetable, or call 1 (973) 275-5555. By connecting at major terminals, the station can be reached from the Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex, Boonton, Main/Bergen County and Pascack Valley lines (see "Rail Connections" section).
  2. Getting to an NJ TRANSIT Station
We recommend that you arrange to be dropped off or take a taxi to your train station. Available parking at stations is limited.
  3. Purchasing Your Ticket
Ticket vending machines (TVMs) are located at all stations along the Northeast Corridor and many stations along the North Jersey Coast Line and at our major terminals in New York, Secaucus, Newark and Hoboken. You can purchase your ticket with a credit card, debit card or cash.
  4. Planning Your Return Trip
Be aware of the train schedule in preparation for your return trip, especially if you plan to return in the evening or early morning.
  5. Traveling Light
There is limited space available on NJ TRANSIT trains, so make sure you travel light. Remember to always keep an eye on your luggage.
  6. Arriving at the Newark Liberty International Airport Station
Once you arrive at the Newark Liberty International Airport Station, you need to transfer to AirTrain to get to the airport terminals. Cross over the pedestrian bridge and follow signs to AirTrain. You must go through a fare payment gate with a valid magnetic ticket that includes the access fee. If your ticket does not include the access fee, you must purchase it at a ticket vending machine located along the pedestrian bridge. The access fee for passengers traveling through the Newark Liberty International Airport Station without a magnetic ticket is $5.50 of which $3.50 is collected on behalf of the Port Authority of NY & NJ. These tickets are available from TVMs at the station.
  7. Taking AirTrain to a Terminal
AirTrain service runs frequently throughout the day to Terminals A, B and C. Directories identifying airlines serving each terminal are located at the station and on AirTrain cars.
  8. Arriving at the Terminal
Once you arrive at the terminal, check in with your airline. Be sure to allow extra time to check baggage and pass through security.
  9. Your Return Trip
Check an NJ TRANSIT train departure monitor (located at AirTrain entrances) to confirm your departure time. (Note: Taxi and limo service, as well as passenger pick up, are not available at the Newark International Airport Station.)

If you did not purchase your return trip ticket in advance, you should purchase a ticket from a ticket vending machine located at the Newark Liberty International Airport Station. Luggage carts cannot be used to transport luggage to train platforms.

Fares & Ticket Options

NJ TRANSIT fares to the Newark Liberty International Airport Station are based on distance traveled, similar to the cost of traveling to other rail stations. Only one-way tickets or monthly passes are available for travel to or from the Newark Liberty International Airport Station. These tickets/passes are magnetically encoded and allow passage through the fare gates at the station. An access fee is applicable and is included in the cost of your ticket to and from the station. Tickets for use at the Newark Liberty International Airport Station are available from ticket vending machines at stations. For NJ TRANSIT fares, call 1 (973) 275-5555.

Monthly Passes save you approximately 30 percent compared to regular one-way fares and are valid for unlimited trips throughout the calendar month. Only monthly passes purchased with the Newark International Airport Station as the origin or destination will allow passage through the fare gate. If your monthly pass is for a destination other than the airport, you will be required to pay an access fee to pass through the station.

If you work at the airport and plan to take NJ TRANSIT service regularly, we recommend that you purchase a monthly pass. Monthly passes can be automatically sent to your home or work site. Plus, you may be able to purchase your monthly pass at work. Legislation enables you to use pre-tax dollars towards your commute. Have your employer call (973) 491-7600 for information on BusinessPass and TransitChek.

One-Way Tickets can be used for one continuous ride between designated stations and are valid until used. If you are traveling to the airport and plan to return via AirTrain and NJ TRANSIT, we recommend that you purchase two one-way tickets prior to departing from your boarding station.

Ticket Purchases On-Board Trains

We encourage you to purchase your ticket before boarding the train.  Tickets purchased on board are subject to a $5 surcharge when a ticket vending machine or ticket agent is available.  Customers boarding without tickets will be charged the regular fare to Newark Penn Station or North Elizabeth (depending on direction traveled) plus surcharge. Upon arrival at the Airport station, you will be required to pay the $5.50 access fee.  Conductors can accept cash only (no bills over $20).  Complete fare details, including Senior Citizen and Children's fare information can be found on rail timetables. Reduced fares do not apply to the $5.50 airport access fee.

  • Buy your tickets in advance. Purchase tickets from NJ TRANSIT ticket vending machines prior to traveling or boarding.
  • If possible, plan to travel during off-peak hours or on weekends, especially if you are traveling with children.
  • Travel light, there is limited space for luggage.
  • Plan your return trip in advance bearing in mind there is no train service between approximately 2:00 a.m. - 4:30 a.m. If your flight arrives after the Newark Liberty International Airport Station has closed for the evening, you will need to take alternate ground transportation to your final destination.
