MTN launches "mobile money" in West and Central Africa
The concept of mobile money has landed in West and Central Africa as MTN the South African MTN mobile company launches "MTN Mobile Money". The announcement was made Monday by South African operator. Kenya: Churches call for fresh elections
The National Council of Churches in Kenya has called for fresh elections in Kenya, reports Allafrica.com. The council bemoans aleadership crisis in the country. Namibia declares state of emergency
President Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia declared a state of emergency in six northern districts of the country due to flooding, reports BBC. The floods have already killed at least 90 people. (Friday 20 March - 16:14)

Ravalomanana has decided to remain in Madagascar
The former President of Madagascar Marc Ravalomanana will not leave the territory of Madagascar, according to L’Express. He is reported to have said after Andry Rajoelina, president of the "Haute Autorité de Transition" (High Authority of Transition - HAT), lifted an order prohibiting him (Ravalomanana) and his ministers from leaving the country. Madagascar: Southern Africa will not recognize Andry Rajoelina
Southern African Development Community (SADC) has refused to recognize the legitimacy of Andry Rajoelina as the new President of Madagascar, France Info has reported. This decision was taken on Thursday during a mini-summit on the situation in that country. The executive committee of the SADC has urged the African Union and the international community to demand the country to return to "constitutional” rule as soon as possible." Nigerian human parts trafficker arrested in Cameroon with human parts and skeleton
A Nigerian trafficker in human parts, Jakson Ekoule, was arrested in the Cameroonian town of Nkapa, about 20 kilometres from Douala, the country’s economic capital, police sources indicated Thursday. "We have had information that many tombs were being desecrated in the region. So we laid ambush and caught Jakson Ekoule red handed," said Colonel Nguete Nguete, Commander of the Mungo military police force in Nkongsamba. According to police sources, Ekoule, whose residence card showed that he was a Nigerian citizen, was carrying a bag containing the parts of a human skeleton. Human parts trafficking, a common phenomenon in Cameroon, is mainly practised in the central, coastal, and western regions of the country. (Friday 20 March - 15:30)

Morocco: Royal Air Maroc to increase aircraft fleet
Official sources from Royal Air Maroc (RAM) have revealed that the company will order six new aircraft before the end of March. RAM is among the African companies that are highly profitable and aims at strengthening its Boeing fleet to reach 50 aircraft. According to Driss Benhima, Chairman and Managing Director RAM, the Moroccan national carrier “will take advantage of the current meltdown to strengthen its operations and face European airlines’ competition”. The traffic between Morocco and the EU has increased from 5.5 million passengers in 2006 to 11.2 million passengers currently. An “Open Skies” agreement signed In 2006, the by the Morocco government and the EU has boosted traffic of passengers between these two destinations by 16 to 19% yearly. Mr. Benhima, however, said RAM was about to record its first loss in 10 years due to the current global financial crisis. (Friday 20 March - 15:28)

Nigeria - Niger: Islamist group training terrorists
Nigerian police sources have alleged that a Shiite Muslim sect is engaged in gun-running and training of militant youths drawn from 13 states in the predominantly-Muslim northern Nigeria as well as neighbouring Niger Republic at its headquarters in Zaria, northern Kaduna state. The allegation, published by the private Guardian newspaper Thursday, was contained in an intelligence report sent to the country’s Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, by the Kaduna state police boss, Tambari Muhammad. ’’The training camp is out of bounds to members of the public except those linked to the Shiite sect. The village is guarded 24 hours by members of the group and they are strategically located around the area,’’ the Kaduna police boss alleged. However, the leader of the sect - Islamic Movement of Nigeria - Sheikh Ibrahim Zakyzaky, denied the allegation. (Friday 20 March - 15:27)

Madagascar
Madagascar: Andry Rajoelina cancels South Korean Daewoo deal
The new president of Madagascar has announced the cancellation of the agricultural project by Daewoo, Jeune Afrique indicated Thursday. "In the Constitution it is stipulated that the land in Madagascar is not for sale or rent, hence the agreement with Daewoo has been annulled," said Andry Rajoelina. According to Financial Times, Madagascar signed a 99 year land lease agreement in July, 2008, with the South Korean group. (Friday 20 March - 15:25)
