Accessibility Statement

Introduction

Jesus College Oxford is aware of the importance of the internet and is endeavouring to make the content of its official web site widely accessible. This web accessibility statement relates specifically to the official Jesus College web site, with addresses beginning www.jesus.ox.ac.uk. If you have any feedback on this site, or comments to make regarding its accessibility, please email the Webmaster.

Accessibility

  • These pages are intended to meet the checkpoints of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 published by the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) to Level AA standards, as required by the University of Oxford Web Accessibility Policy, except where stated below, and to Level AAA where possible.
  • This site complies with the standards for W3C CSS Version 2 and either W3C XHTML 1.0 Strict or W3C HTML 4.01 Transitional.
  • By default, pages delivered are compliant with W3C XHTML 1.0 Strict. Old browsers which identify themselves as Netscape 4.7 are served pages which comply with W3C HTML 4.01 Transitional.
  • A 'Text Only' version of the site is available via the first link on every page.
  • Access Keys are used to implement 'Skip Navigation', 'Home', 'Site Map', 'Search' and 'Feedback' links.

Where WAI Conformance Level AA Is Not Met

  • §3.7  Quotations are not marked up with Q or BLOCKQUOTE tags, because of the inconsistent way in which browsers render these elements.
  • §13.1  There are some pages for which link phrases are used more than once to point to different resources. For example, there are pages where 'Contacts' in the navigation bar points to the main Contacts page, and 'Contacts' within a subset of the navigation bar and/or a page points to a different Contacts page within that section of the web site. Different TITLE attributes are used to avoid confusion.

Where WAI Conformance Level AAA Is Not Met

  • §9.4  A tab order has not been established using the TABINDEX attribute, because the order defined by the source code is logical.
  • §9.5  Keyboard shortcuts have not been provided.
  • §10.4  Text boxes in forms have been left blank.
  • §13.7  Only one search facility is provided, but it does permit the use of wildcards.

Navigation

  • A navigation bar is provided on each page, enabling easy navigation across the site.
  • 'Skip Navigation', 'Home', 'Site Map' and 'Search' links are provided at the top of each page.
  • A breadcrumb trail is provided across the site, to show the section and page the user is on within the site.
  • Other navigational aids include in-page links on long pages with a large amount of content.
  • There are no links that open new windows without warning.

Images

  • All content images used include descriptive ALT attributes.
  • Purely decorative graphics include null ALT attributes.

Multimedia

  • On a few pages, embedded multimedia items such as video and audio clips or interactive panoramas are used. Where such an item contains information of significance, that information is also available as text.
  • To view video clips or listen to audio tracks, Adobe Flash Player must be installed. Alternative links to launch the video clips or audio tracks in Windows Media Player or Apple QuickTime are provided.
  • To view interactive panoramas, Adobe Flash Player must be installed.
  • To view video clips or interactive panoramas or to listen to audio tracks in Internet Explorer, and those browsers which emulate it, JavaScript must be enabled.

Visual Design

  • The default text font is Microsoft Verdana, a sans serif font designed specifically for on-screen display.
  • Background and foreground colours have been chosen with a high degree of contrast to maximise visibility.
  • Colours are controlled within the style sheet and therefore may be overridden by altering the browser settings.
  • This site uses relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified 'text size' option in visual browsers. For example, if using Internet Explorer, the default text size can be made larger under the 'View' menu, by selecting 'Text Size' and then 'Larger' or 'Largest'.
  • A 'Wide Page' link is provided at the top of each page, which switches the display from the default 'Normal Page' width of about 850 pixels to fill the current width of the browser window.
  • A 'Plain Page' link is provided at the top of each page, which removes the pale grey Jesus College crest wallpaper featured in the default 'Fancy Page'.
  • If a browser or browsing device does not support style sheets at all, the content of each page is still readable.

Browser-Specific Notes

  • This site has been tested extensively using Internet Explorer 6 and 7, Netscape 7.2, Netscape 8.1, Firefox 2.0, Firefox 3.0, Mozilla 1.7, Opera 9 and Safari 3.0.
  • Old Netscape 4.7 browsers, which do not properly support cascading style sheets, are served basic but fully functional pages, including embedded multimedia items such as video and audio clips and interactive panoramas.
  • To avoid problems with the activation of ActiveX controls following the installation of software updates released by Microsoft in April 2006, JavaScript is used within Internet Explorer, and those browsers which emulate it, to load embedded multimedia items such as video clips, audio tracks or interactive panoramas.
  • To view video clips or listen to audio tracks, Adobe Flash Player must be installed.
