The Policy Editor Tool Is Not Supported in Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q266271

SUMMARY

Windows Millennium Edition (Me) does not include the System Policy Editor tool (Poledit.exe). In addition, the System Policy Editor tool that was included in Microsoft Windows 95, and Microsoft Windows 98 is not supported in Windows Me.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows Me has features that are designed specifically for home users, and thus is not intended for policy use. Because of this, Windows Me does not use a Policy.pol file, which is designed specifically for use with policies.

When you upgrade to Windows Me from a Windows 95, or Windows 98 computer that used policies, the computer may exhibit unusual behavior after the upgrade. Microsoft does not support generating a specific policy file for a user, or disabling a policy that was created by the network administrator.

Although Windows Me does not support policies, you may be able to install the System Policy Editor tool in Windows Me for testing purposes. If you choose to install Poledit.exe on Windows Me, Microsoft recommends that you install it in a test environment, and not on a primary computer, or operating system.
