FIVE BEST PLAYS
A View from the Bridge (Duke of York’s, London)
A cracking play in an outstanding revival. You can feel the grease dripping off Ken Stott as Arthur Miller’s troubled longshoreman Eddie Carbone, a rolling, Punch-nosed punchbag of a doomed docker, whose smouldering affection for his own niece is fanned into flames by the arrival of two illegal Sicilian immigrants from the old country.

A Little Night Music (Menier Chocolate Factory, London)
The Merchant of Venice
(Watermill, Newbury)
Edward Hall’s inspired, intelligent revival for the all-male Propeller company. Michael Pavelka’s design, cunningly lit by Ben Ormerod, allows for shape-shifting fluency in performance.
(01635 46044) Tue to 4 May
Lenny Henry towers physically over the rest of the cast in this Northern Broadsides/West Yorkshire Playhouse co-production, but the show is rightly more of an ensemble evening than a star vehicle.
(0113-213 7700) to 14 Mar
War Horse
(NT: OLIVIER, LONDON)
Revival of the National Theatre’s moving adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel, about a farm horse sold to the cavalry and pitched into the thick of the battle in the First World War.
