Dance fever: ABC
owns this summer

No. 1 in 18-49s and only network to show gains

    ABC showed the biggest year-to-year gains among adults 18-49 during the regular season because it had the biggest new hit. 
   That same pattern is holding for the summer.
   Every other network is either flat or down for the first five weeks of the summer compared with last year. But ABC, which has the summer’s only big hit in “Dancing With the Stars,” is actually up.
   The network is in first place, according to Nielsen data provided by Fox, with a 2.4 average for May 30 to July 3. That’s up 4 percent over last summer, when ABC averaged a 2.3 to this point.
   Four percent doesn’t sound like a big rise, but the other networks are well behind ABC and showing no gains. NBC, down 19 percent, CBS, down 9 percent, and Fox, which is flat, are tied for second at a 2.1 average rating. The WB and UPN are both flat at 1.0.
   Almost all of ABC’s bump is courtesy of Wednesday’s “Stars,” the summer’s highest-rated show. ABC’s average rating is up 60 percent on Wednesday compared with last year, to a 3.2.
   It’s showing improvement on only one other night, low-rated Thursdays, where Game 7 of the NBA Finals two weeks ago helped push its average up 33 percent to a 3.2.
  Without “Last Comic Standing” on the schedule, NBC is down 38 percent on Tuesdays to a 2.1 average. It’s also down 30 percent on Wednesdays to a 2.3.
   CBS is up more than 30 percent on Tuesday, with “Fire Me, Please” replacing the low-rated “Guardian.” But Monday’s average is off 17 percent and Thursday is down 14 percent.
   Fox is up 73 percent on Tuesday on the strength of the 9 p.m. “House.” The show did not become a hit until midseason, when “American Idol” gave it a boost, and now many fans are tuning in to see the episodes they missed pre-“Idol.”

    In other broadcast ratings for the week ended July 3:

   Among adults 18-49, ABC and CBS tied at No. 1 with a 2.0 rating and 7 share, followed by NBC with 1.9/6, Fox with 1.7/6, UPN with 1.0/3 and the WB with 0.9/3.

Among adults 18-34, Fox was first with a 1.6/7, ABC second with a 1.5/6, NBC third with a 1.4/5, CBS fourth with a 1.3/5, UPN fifth with a 1.0/3 and the WB sixth with a 0.9/4.

Among adults 25-54, CBS was first with a 2.5 rating and 8 share. Tied at second were ABC and NBC with a 2.3/7, followed by Fox in fourth with 1.8/6. UPN was fifth with a 1.0/3 and the WB sixth with a 0.9/3.

Top five (18-49s): 1. ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” 5.6; 2. CBS’s “CSI” 3.8; 3. Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen” 3.4; 4. CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” 3.4; 5. CBS’s “CSI: Miami” 3.4.

Top five (total viewers): 1. ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” 18.6 million; 2. CBS’s “CSI” 13.3 million; 3. CBS’s “Without a Trace” 11.4 million; 4. CBS’s “CSI: Miami” 10.7 million; 5. CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” 10.6 million.

Bottom five (18-49s): 103. UPN’s “All of Us” 0.6; 104. UPN’s “Bad Girl’s Guide” 0.6; 105. WB’s “Beauty and the Geek” (Sunday 7 p.m.) 0.6; 106. WB’s “One Tree Hill” 0.6; 107. UPN’s Movie Friday 0.4.

Bottom five (total viewers): 103. WB’s “Beauty and the Geek” (Sunday 9 p.m.) 1.5 million; 104. WB’s “Beauty and the Geek” (Sunday 7 p.m.) 1.4 million; 105. UPN’s “Bad Girl’s Guide” 1.4 million; 106. WB’s “One Tree Hill” 1.3 million; 107. UPN’s Movie Friday 1.0 million.

Show on the rise: “2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup” NBC, Saturday 9:55 p.m. NBC’s inaugural broadcast of the Pepsi 400 race averaged a 5.5 household rating and 13 share, despite a more than two and a half hour rain delay that pushed its finish back to 2 a.m. The event bettered the 2004 race’s ratings on Fox by 6 percent.

Show on the decline: “Summerland,” WB, Monday 9 p.m. No wonder the show has been canceled—it averaged a 0.8 18-49 rating last week despite being one of a handful of new shows on Monday night, losing 11 percent from repeat lead-in “Seventh Heaven.”
