Anthony Edwards on NBC's 'ER'

Jerry Seinfeld on NBC's '75th Anniversary' special

NBC's 'Third Watch'

  NBC soars as
others stumble

Widest lead among 18 to 49s since Olympics

By Mike Jasik

Sweeps stunts may be bombing for the other networks, but they are pulling for NBC, along with its regular programming, and the effect is impressive.
NBC last week enjoyed its widest margin of victory in adults 18-49 since the winter Olympics in February.
   NBC posted a 5.9 in adults 18-49, CBS trailed with a 3.6, Fox had a 3.5, ABC a 3.0, WB a 1.7 and UPN a 1.6.
Eight of the top 10 shows among adults 18-49 were on the peacock network.
Topping the list was the second-to-last episode with Dr. Mark Greene on NBC’s “ER,” which collecting a large 12.9 adult 18-49 rating.
Next week should see that number swell as audiences say goodbye to longtime “ER” star Anthony Edwards, who is not coming back next year.
NBC’s mid-range hit “Third Watch” saw its numbers skyrocket when Dr. Susan Lewis from “ER” came over as part of a crossover episode.
Ranking tenth for the week in the highly coveted adult 18-49 demographic, “Third Watch” drew a fat 7.0 in the demo, jumping 63 percent from the previous week.
NBC’s freshman hit drama “Crossing Jordan” cashed in on this lead-in, climbing 41 percent from the previous week to a solid 5.9 among adults 18-49.
Though reviled by some critics as a exercise in self-congratulation, “NBC’s 75th Anniversary” special packed enough big names, like Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby and Kelsey Grammer, to attract as many adults 18-49 as “Survivor” but for three full hours.
Its 7.8 adult 18-49 rating put it in sixth place for the week, though its 20+ million viewers ranked fourth.
Other specials didn’t do nearly as well.
Though drawing nearly 12 million total viewers, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno: 10th Anniversary” garnered just a respectable 4.4 in adults 18-49.
NBC’s “Bob Hope’s Funniest Out-takes” pulled in a million viewers more than Jay, but that translated to a so-so 3.6 among adults 18-49, not surprising since the 99-year-old comedian hasn’t been in the spotlight in decades.
Taking advantage of continued weak numbers for Fox, CBS pulled into second place for the week, aided largely by the second half of the “Living with the Dead” miniseries.
Rising 3 percent from the previous Sunday, the Ted Danson supernatural drama posted a strong 6.0 in adults 18-49, attracting over 17 million total viewers.
CBS's "Survivor Marquesas" muddled through another week, sticking with its lowest rating, a 7.8 in adults 18-49, for a second week in a row.
The rivalry between it and "Friends" has turned into a regular beating, as two episodes of the top comedy pulled in 39 percent more adult 18-49 viewers than the reality pioneer.

Thus far stuck with dismal ratings for soon-concluded series like “Ally McBeal” and “The X-Files,” Fox achieved limited success with three episodes of “That ‘70s Show.”
The full-hour retrospective of the first 100 episodes drew a solid 4.8 adult 18-49 rating. The new episode and the repeat picked by fans as their favorite episode each collected a 4.3 in the demo.
Fresh off its lucky “Bachelor” run, reality crashed down on ABC as neither new episodes or specials drew many viewers.
“Gilda Radner’s Greatest Moments” hauled in a modest 3.6 in adults 18-49, while the two-hour TV movie “Gilda Radner: It’s Always Something” drew a slightly better 3.9 in the demo.
“American Bandstand’s 50th: A Celebration!” did even worse, but its 3.2 in the demo wasn’t too shabby considering its difficult Friday 8 p.m. timeslot.
NBC took a win in households as well, averaging a 9.7/16 household rating and share for the week. CBS collected an 8.0/13, ABC 5.6/9, Fox a 4.7/8, WB a 2.8/5 and UPN 2.4/4.

* NHTI ratings and projections are based on 10.2 million Hispanic TV homes in the U.S.
* For inclusion in the rankings, telecasts must be promoted as distinct programs and must be of 5 minutes minimum duration.
Rating - A rating is a percent of the total universe, most commonly referred to as a percent of total television households. A rating is always quantifiable, assuming you know the universe estimate. For instance, the total number of Hispanic Households in the U.S. for the 2001-2002 broadcast season is 10,200,000. Hence, a HH Rating of 1 among Hispanics is equal to approximately 1,020,000 Hispanic Households.
