Page 30 - The Dylan Dog Case Files, $24.95, 680 Pages
Written by Tiziano Sclavi, Art by Angelo Stano, Andrea Venturi, Giampiero, Casertano, Luigi Piccatto, and Bruno Brindisi

Dylan Dog is a series of horror comics that originated in Italy and has been popular in Europe for some time now, with monthly figures that put most American books these days to shame. It is set to be adapted into a feature film sometime in 2009 called Dead of the Night, and will star Brandon Routh in the titular role. If you are a fan of horror comics, you may want to pick this collection up. Dylan Dog has been translated into English before by Dark Horse, but this is a great chance to get it all in one book at a great price. Hellboy's Mike Mignola drew the cover, as an added bonus to check this one out.

Page 69 - Batman Confidential #26, $2.99, 32 Pages
Written by Christina Weir and Nunzio DeFilippis, Art by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez and Kevin Nowlan

This title doesn't often get much attention, especially during times like these when Batman is undergoing such an important change, but this issue is special. King Tut, the character from Adam West's Batman in the 60s, is making his comic debut. Of course with luck, this King Tut will not be the fat, silly man from the show, but instead a very serious supernatural threat. Weir and DeFilippis are an excellent team, and I have no doubt they will do a great job adapting one of my favorite antagonists from that show into the modern comic setting. Can't wait!

Page 70
Nightwing #153, $2.99, 32 Pages
Written by Peter J. Tomasi, Art by Don Kramer & Jay Leisten
Robin #183, $2.99, 32 Pages
Written by Fabian Nicieza, Art by Freffie E. Williams II

This month marks the end of both of these titles, in anticipation for the upcoming "Battle For the Cowl" arc. Now that Bruce Wayne is gone, someone is set to take his place, and Nightwing and Robin seem to be the frontrunners (though there are some other options). The fact that these titles are going to end, along with the rumor that there will be a new Batman and Robin title (that, or the existing Batman book's title will be changed - a more likely option) seem to favor the idea that Dick Grayson will be the one to take up the mantle. Of course, with DC these days, it is really impossible to predict. The "final" fate of Bruce Wayne is set to be revealed in Final Crisis - after that point we can expect the details of that arc to begin to emerge.

It really is a shame to lose these books - both have been fairly high quality through the bulk of their long runs, to end for something that seems to be very temporary doesn't seem like the best idea. DC is on a real kick of late bringing back long-dead originals like Hal Jordan and Barry Allen - to think they would cast aside Bruce Wayne for good, especially when rumors about the Dark Knight sequel abound doesn't fit DC's usual MO. Still, despite all that, who hasn't wanted to see Dick finally inherit the cowl, if only for a short time? Could be worth it.

Page 76 - Birds of Prey #127, $2.99, 32 Pages
Written by Tony Bedard, Art by Claude St. Aubin & John Floyd

Also ending this month is Birds of Prey - though technically a Batman title, thanks to the involvement of Oracle and this title's historical tie to Gotham City, but unlike Nightwing and Robin, the Birds are largely independent, and the title itself is about many more than Oracle. Thank's to Gail Simone's practically legendary run on this book, it became the title where female characters actually grew and developed in a way that they never had before. Black Canary, Lady Blackhawk, and Huntress (and more recently Misfit) have become deep and much more interesting characters thanks to their tenure on this book, and losing that over a Batman event seems a little silly. This book worked - and it is hard to imagine that it is the last we have seen of it. Definitely pick up this issue, if only to properly send off one of DC's great books. Hopefully we will see it return soon.

Page 76 - Blue Beetle #36, $2.99, 32 Pages
Written by Matthew Sturges, Art by Carlo Barberi

Another final issue - this one a little bittersweet. Jaime Reyes became the Blue Beetle in a somewhat controversial manner, in a time when DC was actively attempting to diversify their line-up. Beating the odds (pretty well every change they made in that time along those lines has faded away) thanks to great writing, Jaime was accepted as the Blue Beetle by the fans and this title became one of DC's better books. Sadly, in recent months, this title has started diving into "topical" racial issues - which ended up being something of a mistake. One of the reasons Jaime was accepted by the fans was because it was a "minority" hero done right - and not a character who's #1 motivation was his race. It wasn't that bad, but the last few arcs have dealt heavily with those issues, and it proved to be something of a downer. Thankfully, all was not lost - the Blue Beetle has become a Teen Titans regular, and McKeever has kept the focus on the things that made this book so good originally.

Lesson for the future - a superhero is an interesting character for his or her heroic spirit and motivation - the rest is just window dressing. Shame to see this title go, but it accomplished something many thought impossible - established Jaime Reyes firmly in the role of the Blue Beetle, and made the character strong enough that it isn't going anywhere, even without the ongoing title.

Page 81 - The Mighty #1, $2.99, 32 Pages
[i]Written by Peter J. Tomasi & Keith Champagne, Art by Pater Snejbjerg[/b]

This is a new ongoing, but even though it has the DC imprint, it doesn't seem to be tied at all to the Multiverse. But you never know. This title will center on Alpha One, the planet's only superhero, who happens to have an entire police organization devoted to supporting his activities. Tough to say from the solicit, but it looks like the series protagonists will actually be members of that task force, and not the hero himself. Potentially a decent idea. Tomasi and Snejbjerg worked together before on the outstanding Light Brigade series - so at the very least you should know going into this that the quality of the work will be high.

Page 85 - R.E.B.E.L.S. #1, $2.99, 32 Pages
Written by Tony Bedard, Art by Andy Clark

Not R.E.B.E.L.S. '09? Man, that's just breaking with tradition! This is the latest title that follows the exploits of Vril Dox (Brainiac 2), who we saw a lot of in the 90's in Keith Giffen's L.E.G.I.O.N. '89-'94 run (followed by Tom Peyer's R.E.B.E.L. '94-'96). Series has some nostalgia value, but Tony Bedard made his name doing sci-fi superheroics and is the ideal writer to take on a title like this. Not quite Green Lantern or Legion of Superheroes, but there is some potential here. Could be worth a shot.

Page 110 - Bang! Tango! #1 (of 6), $2.99, 32 Pages
Written by Joe Kelly, Art by Adrian Siber & Rodney Ramos

A brand new Vertigo mini from Joe Kelly - this one is described as "Neo-noir," which basically refers to noir stories with more modern themes and settings. It’s a pretty apt description if the preview made available for this book is any indication - a loner protagonist with personal problems that gets a hired by the beautiful woman with a secret. Kelly's more than a competent writer, and the art definitely works for the genre - looks like a decent read.

Page 114 - 100 Bullets #100, $2.99, 32 Pages
Written by Brian Azzarello, Art by Eduardo Risso

Well, this title certainly isn't selling nearly what it once did, but as promised this title has reached the 100 issue mark and is coming to an end. Azzarello and Risso definitely deserve congratulations for getting this book done all the way to the end, and also for the timeliness of the comic itself. It is rare - especially for projects that aren't so high profile, but 100 Bullets #1 was released back in August of 1999, some 115 months ago. Yeah, so in a way, that means this issue is 15 months late, but when you think about the length of this title and compare it to some of the efforts put out today, that is extremely impressive. This one is probably going out with less fanfare than it deserves, but no doubt the devout are waiting on the edge of their seats.

Page 142 - Bad Dog #1, $3.99, 40 Pages
Written by Joe Kelly, Art by Diego Greco

The real Dog, the Bounty Hunter?

Image has proclaimed Fabruary to be "Man of Action" month, in reference to the studio formed by Joe Kelly, Joe Casey, Steven Seagle, and Duncan Rouleau. No real special reason for the event outside the fact that each of the four have a project launching this month (three new minis and a Codeflesh hardcover). Heck, in comics, the best reason to celebrate is when you have new projects coming out, so it is as good a reason as any. Bad Dog is being compared to Deadpool - mostly because it focuses on a pair of 'down on their luck' anti-heroes, and the concept seems to lend itself to some violent humor, the hallmark of Kelly's acclaimed Deadpool run. If you remember those bygone days and are looking for something similar, this could be something to check out.

Page 159 - Invincible #59, $2.99, 32 Pages
Written by Robert Kirkman, Art by Ryan Ottley & FCO Plascencia

It's that time again - a new month, so a new addition to Robert Kirkman's "on time in '09" pledge. Probably the best thing for the overall health and growth of the comic industry would be if all creator-owned books started coming out with real regularity, especially at Image. So despite recent waves Kirkman made soon after he was named a partner at Image, this idea is a good one and deserves some support. The best way to do that is to keep track of the solicit days, and watch the progress.

Notable this month is the lack of Brit - which was cancelled earlier this month. According to Kirkman, the reason for the cancellation was low sales, which does make sense. At the very least, this should make it much easier for the rest of the books to come out on time this coming year.

Ultimate Fantastic Four #60, $3.99, 32 Pages

Ultimate X-Men #100, $3.99, 32 Pages
Written by Aron Coleite, Art by Mark Brooks

Well then! Much like Batman R.I.P. lead to the cancellation of Nightwing, Robin, and Birds of Prey, Ultimatum has lead to the cancellation of Ultimate Fantastic Four and X-Men this month.

While cancelling the three DC books didn't seem like such a good idea, this move by Marvel might be exactly what was needed. The Batman books didn't really need fixed, but the Ultimate books did. Each of them (outside Ultimate Spider-Man, which is generally great, and has been consistent since it started) has had various problems through various writers for some time, and with each creative team, the problems with each book that needed to be solved were compounded. Why not have a major event, and use that as an excuse to just start fresh?

It is still way too early to tell if Ultimatum will get the job done, but at the very least Marvel seems to know what the problem is. That is a positive sign.

Page M34 - Astonishing Tales #1, $3.99, 40 Pages
Written by C.B.Cebulski, Daniel Merlin Goodbury, Chris Sequera, & Jonathan Hickman, Art by Kenneth Roquefort, Lou Kang, Chew Chan, Nick Pitarra, & Jonathan Hickman.

This series is something of a surprise - after Marvel Comics Presents, it seemed like Marvel would have given up on the anthology. Not only is Amazing Spider-Man Family looking to be on solid ground, this title starting up brings some hope that they are very serious about the concept. No telling what changes will be made to make this anthology a success where Marvel Comics Presents failed (no 12 issue stories would be a good start), but that will become clear when the series actually comes out. Hopefully Marvel can get the formula right this time - a good anthology book would make a great addition to their regular line-up.

Page M46 - Incredible Hercules #126, $3.99, 48 Pages
Written by Fred Van Lente & Greg Pak, Art by Rodney Buchemi

This issue is described as a good jumping on point for new readers - that seems to be accurate. We are going to get a couple stories in this issue, the main one being a presentation of Hercules' Marvel origin, with a back-up featuring Amadeus Cho searching for Kirby. This title might best be described as a sleeper - it is a great book that is involved in the ongoing happenings and events in the Marvel Universe, but it almost never seems the center of attention. It is one of Marvel's consistently quality titles, thanks in large part to the mind of Greg Pak. If this is a chance for a new reader to get on board the book, you should take it. This title deserves way more attention than it is getting.

Page M49 - Marvel TV: Galactus: The Real Story, $3.99, 48 Pages
Written by Frank Tieri, Art by Juan Santacruz

With a host of shows on cable these days that investigate the various myths and legends, it only seems natural that in the Marvel Universe, there would be hundreds of conspiracy theories about every little thing that happens on the pages of those comics. It is kind of a surprise that no one thought to do something like this sooner - there would have to be a sizable chunk of the population that would come up with all kinds of wild theories about what Galactus really was. Not a bad concept here.

Page M51 - Models, Inc. #1 (of 4), $3.99, 32 Pages
Written by Paul Tobin, Art by Vicenc Villagrassa

You know, it is almost disturbing how many of Marvel's female protagonists are fashion models. Well, this book is going to have a gaggle of them, including Mary Jane, Patsy Walker, and Millie the Model.

At first look at the cover to this one invokes the Luna Brothers' Ultra series, which also used the magazine cover motif for each of its issues. Makes sense really, as this comic focuses on Fashion Models - covers are very important to those ladies. Well, if anything, this series will feature the return of Millie the Model and a few of her supporting cast - an unlikely occurance, but kind of cool all the same that a 63 year old model can still get on the cover of a fashion rag! It doesn't appear that this book will follow the usual humor or romantic adventure genre that the old Millie books had, instead placing Millie at the center of a murder investigation.

No way to tell how this one will turn out - it gets high marks for being pretty original when stacked up to other Marvel titles though.

Page M53 - Nova #22, $2.99, 32 Pages
Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning, Art by Wellington Alves

Leave it to DnA to make the return of the Nova Corps suck a tense and captivating story. Many readers expected the Nova Corps to pop right back up shortly after the first Annihilation wrapped up, but it took a bit longer than that, and has ended up being a far more interesting story than anyone anticipated it would be. A power-mad Worldmind is a nice twist. Once again if you still aren't reading this book, you really need to be.

Page M63 - War of Kings: Darkhawk #1 (of 2), $3.99, 48 Pages
Written by CB Cebulski, Art by Harvey Tolibao

Never thought we'd see this again, but for a time it didn't seem like we would see a Nova resurgence either. Sure, this is tied to an event series, but the same was true for Nova as well, and look what that lead to. This is a big issue - but a chunk of it reprints the original Darkhawk #1, in case you never read that before. Chances are Darkhawk fans already salivating over this series already have that issue in their collection though.

All it takes is one good story for a character to take off... let's hope this is it for Darkhawk.

Craig's Top Five of the Month

#5 - Astonishing Tales #1, $3.99, 40 Pages, Marvel Comics. Cautiously optimistic here.

#4 - Birds of Prey #127, $2.99, 32 Pages, DC Comics. This one will probably be relaunched - doesn't mean the cancellation isn't a sad one.

#3 - Marvel TV: Galactus: The Real Story, $3.99, 48 Pages, Marvel Comics. Potential winner here. Could be very good.

#2 - Bang! Tango! #1 (of 6), $2.99, 32 Pages, DC Comics. Execution matters - but the idea of a more modern Noir is appealing.

#1 - War of Kings: Darkhawk #1 (of 2), $3.99, 48 Pages, Marvel Comics. The next Nova? It would be cool, that's for sure.
