Helen Henderson

Our article 'Off the rise and rapid fall of Britain's flashiest referee' (29 January), we used a photograph of Mark Clattenburg and Helen Henderson whom we described as his fiancee. The photograph was taken in 2000 and Helen Hattenburg is no longer Mr Clattenburg's fiancee but his former wife

Inside Corrections

Standpoint

Monday, 26 January 2009

In the media section on 29 December we wrongly stated that former deputy editor Jonathan Foreman had left Standpoint. In fact he continues to work for the magazine as writer-at-large.

Butlers

Saturday, 24 January 2009

In our articles, "Tory chief's firm cost councils £470m" (19 January), and "Councils' £800m losses spark MPs' inquiry" (20 January), we referred to Butlers, one of the companies which has advised local authorities. The headline of the firstarticle wrongly suggested that Butlers had been directly responsible for the loss of deposits made in Icelandic banks.

Constance Briscoe

Friday, 23 January 2009

In Arts & Books on 5 December 2008 we published extracts from various websites which commented on Constance Briscoe's successful defence of the libel action brought against her book, 'Ugly', by her mother. One of these extracts suggested Ms Briscoe was looking to recover her legal costs from her mother. We accept that Ms Briscoe has made it clear that any decision to enforce the judge's order for costs against her mother would be made by her publishers and not by Ms Briscoe herself, and that Ms Briscoe’s publicly expressed preference is that in any event her mother should not have to lose her home. We are happy to make these points clear.

Roman Abramovich and Chelsea FC

Friday, 23 January 2009

In The Independent on Sunday on 18 January we reported on a story in that day's Sunday Times which suggested Roman Abramovich's representatives have been in talks over selling his interest in Chelsea FC, and also reported statements made by the club the day before confirming that Mr Abramovich was not looking to sell his interest and that he remained committed as ever. In publishing this story we did not of course mean to suggest that Mr Abramovich or Chelsea had lied or misled the public, a point we are happy to underline now.

Allied Irish Bank

Tuesday, 20 January 2009

An article on Saturday 17 January referred to the announcement, two days previously, by the Irish government that it was nationalising a bank, but wrongly named it as Allied Irish Bank. In fact it is Anglo Irish Bank.

Mark Lawson

Monday, 19 January 2009

In the article about Jonathan Ross, 'So, did anyone miss him?' (14 January 2009), we wrote that Mark Lawson had told the Radio Times that Ross should " 'Ship Out!'. In fact this was the headline of the Radio Times article but was not a quote from Mark Lawson.

John Humphrys

Saturday, 17 January 2009

In a report on the events behind David Frost's interview with Richard Nixon in yesterday's Independent, we published an article, " I never agree that certain subjects are off-limits". This was bylined "by John Humphrys". We should make it clear this was not an article written by Mr Humphrys, but a report of what he had said to our interviewer. Apologies.

Imran Khan

Friday, 16 January 2009

A news in brief item on 9 January referred to the politician Imran Khan who was speaking to the court from Pakistan by video link during the trial of two London-based Baluchi defendants who deny charges of assisting terrorism. We have been asked to point out that Mr Khan was giving evidence as to the security and political situation in Pakistan, and that he did not "defend terror suspects" but in fact told the court that in his view there was "no place for terrorism in a civilised society".

PCC adjudication

Tuesday, 6 January 2009

The Press Complaints Commission has investigated whether an article published on The Independent website under the headline “Chainsaw death was ‘carefully thought through suicide’”, contained excessive detail about the method of suicide used in breach of Clause 5 (Intrusion into grief or shock) of the Code.
