Geordie Greig is handing in his notice as editor of 'Tatler' this weekend. After much speculation that he is leaving to take up a senior post at the 'Evening Standard', fuelled by news he set up a company with its new proprietors the Lebedevs, I can confirm the move is now taking place. On Friday night, Greig was telephoning senior 'Standard' staff to tell them in person he was looking forward to working with them, mindful they should hear it from him ahead of a general announcement next week.

One question that has been curiously underplayed in the purchase of London's Evening Standard by Alexander Lebedev, the Russian billionaire, is this: should a British newspaper be owned by a foreigner? In almost any other country this would be a highly charged issue – it is inconceivable that the French would allow an overseas company to buy Le Monde, the Italians La Stampa or the Spanish El Pais. It would be a matter of national honour.
