Gig review: Kanye West in Wellington

The Dominion Post | Wednesday, 03 December 2008
KENT BLECHYNDEN/Dominion Post

THE GOSPEL: Who did Kanye West think he was fooling with his endless preaching to the faithful?

Related Links

Early delights at Kanye West's Wellington tour stop were soon lost in a sea of sermonising. Reviewer Simon Sweetman was there.

Kanye West
Where: TSB Arena, Wellington
When: Tuesday, December 2

Kanye West made his name as a producer to the stars, sampling old soul records to give shiny new hip-hop-influenced pop music a different feel.

From there, he ventured out under his own name and just last week put out his fourth album, 808s & Heartbreak, which ditches the hip-hop genre to focus on the Cher-meets-Daft Punk sound of heavily Vocoder-drenched vocals Auto-Tuned to provide a robotic slur in place of bad notes.

It is obnoxious when used sparingly and, over the course of an album, is close to unbearable.

West's show sees him dipping back to the catchy hip-hop delights from earlier albums; it is not enough. And his decision to "sing" with his robot-microphone and take time to lambast the video editors into focusing only on his good side, tell the band how to play the numbers and announce to the audience when certain songs are very good (being schooled in rap, he uses the adjective that rhymes with trucking) does not endear him.

At one point he stumbles through a long diary-like spiel about how, if he is done with hip-hop, so be it. He tells reviewers that they don't know anything unless they have played or produced.

And his defensiveness is neither catchy nor interesting.

The sermons might have been lapped up by a few, since this was the church of Kanye he was preaching at, but really, you have to wonder who he thinks he is fooling.

The decision to focus on a crowd schooled on radio-ready pop music sees West oversell his product, which means he is underselling his art.

The stumbling start ruined what could have been an exciting, dynamic show. History will remember Kanye West as nothing more than Puff Daddy Version 2.0.

Nasir Jones, who records under the moniker NaS, delivered a passionate set, proving that hip-hop, when taken seriously and performed with flair, can be an art form; more than just posturing and bluster.

Black President must feel good for NaS to sing now; it was released earlier this year announcing Barack Obama as America's next president well before the election.

But NaS took a trip back to his classic early-1990s album, Illmatic, a lean, mean rarity in the rap canon; a near-perfect album and it still sounds vital and real.

  2. i got there late and saw about 30 seconds of nas, it was far better than the endless crap kayne dropped.

infact the huge load of drool i saw fall from kaynes mouth was probably the best thing to come out of it.

  5. While autotuners are usually the bain of any recording, the album as a whole is not bad at all- when it comes down to it, Kanye knows how to make a beat.

As the for the preaching and posturing, again, hey, it's Kanye, the fans expected it!

    Overall, good show!

  6. I thought this concert was awesome, Kanye was great and I think it shows his character as an artist that he played for about 2 and a half hours to a concert of less than 5000 when he sells out 120,000 seater stadiums in the USA.

I thought Nas was average at best and Scribe even worse... The crowd actually groaned when he came back and he was like "Don't worry, I'm only going to do one more song then I'll go" Felt real sorry for him lol.

Anyone find out why Scribe came on with a backpack??

  7. All said and done, the concert was huge. NZ has been graced by two of the best in the game at one concert!

Yes Kanye's rant was a bit tough to bear but I would have listened to it twice over in order to hear the magic that was the rest of his set.

Mr West is keeping the game on its toes and without him what would be stuck with? My guess is some tired 50 cent 1 dimensional effort.

I will be at his next concert and look forward to seeing what his next masterful step will be.

  8. To a real Hip Hop lover Kanye was average after Nas. Nas was insanely good though and not showing his age at all.

If you're going to be as full of yourself as Kanye you need to back it up with a nonstop awesome set, not just a few good tracks in amongst a giant wah fest.

I'd love to see Nas back as a headline act, bringing some other true Hip Hop heads with him.

  9. Kanye was unforgivably excruciating. He has seriously become quite delusional & developed quite the siege mentality. I came to see a hip-hop show & was severely disappointed / tortured mercilessly. I'm glad the little kids got their money's worth. At least NAS represented!

  10. I think the reviewer got it right. Nas was classic hip-hop, performed with gusto and he looked genuinally happy with the crowd and happy to be there. Kanye was all over the place and by the end I was Kanye'd out. Of course he let everybody know he couldn't care what they thought.

The set itself peaked too early and by the end I was asking for a deckchair, a lot of his tracks, even the majors were actually quite hard to dance to and the slower newer stuff is basically just stand and watch. Touch the Sky was the best for me and Champion ruled also. But they were stuck in the middle, there was no build up, no momentum, no peak.

I think big shows like that need to be about the audience and ensuring they have a sick night. Kanye's set was more about Kanye and him venting all his emotions, like he was lying on a psychiatrist's couch and not in front of how ever many adoring fans. That being said he has contributed to hip hop in such a huge way you can't really hold it against him, the few tracks I was there to see were very very cool and real artists always need to transform.

  12. i like his songs only..everything's great but himself and his attitude..being fashionably late and bossing around his own band "hey piano, keep playing!" what is that?

his preaching about other celebrities walking along red carpet are no good while he himself wears real fur.

he's not a good performer per se..he didnt even mention 'hi new zealand, thank you for coming' not at all..i like his backup-singer-lady better..she's good dancer

i'm glad that i just paid half price (i guess this is why they sold the tickets cheap and no wonder there are at least ten groups in facebook saying that kanye west is a douche)

but it still worth because the drumming band was awesome!!

  14. well at the end of it all, we saw that a big percentage of the crowd was there for kanye, ehich we could tell by the screaming. not NAS which in my opinion have the most boring uninspired unoriginal music in the planet and some of the crowd agreed as they threw glow sticks at him as he went on & on & on & on...... & on, all his songs sounding the same with the same old lyrics. 2 my suprise i have to say that i had more fun listening to scribe.

    overall kanye ruled the night.

A human (like Kanye said, he was just the same as us) lays their soul before a crowd and all the reviewer can do is throw stones from a distance?

From where I was standing (middle crowd) everyone was journeying with Kanye, through the excitement and emotion, it was amazing.

Thanks for the music Kanye... you are one of the greatest musical talents of our time. We look forward to where you're gonna take us next.

  24. NZ reviewers seem to intensely dislike that Kanye has an opinion, confidence and an ego. He's not humble and a try-hard - tough get over it!! If he wants to express himself through his music - great. He's the one travelling the world getting paid to live his dream - The fans loved it and thats what counts!

The concert that the reviewers and the one the concert goers attended seems to be a different one.

Concert goers enjoyed the ride - while the pencil scatchers were obviously hunched over in the corner furiously etching out their envy.

In reviewing the reviewer - stick to your day job - and if it is your day job - lose the green eyed envy or stick to reviewing the groups like HI 5! Just a suggestion.

  25. It was well worth the ticket price just to catch NAS, gutted we missed Scribe, highlight of the nite was Nas and his bands whole set and the climax of 'Made You Look' Would of felt a shorter tighter set from Kanye instead of dragging on al night, saying that he put on a great show, big shout out to his backing band who run a tight ship. Thru the wire, All falls down, Good life blew up but we found his preaching and extended mixes were toilet stop breaks.

  27. Brilliant review. Kanye had no idea how to play to the crowd. Cutting shorts songs we were loving, and dragging out others way past their best before date.

I think the comment "F**k Elvis" was what put me over the edge. Kanye aint got nothin on the king. His ego needs to be calmed the f down. he didn't even speak to the audience. His show was all about HIM. That's not entertainment, that's bathing in your own reflection.

Maybe he should take some advice from his 808 & Heartbreak album and actually work to fig himself out of the lonely hated hole he's found himself in.

Kanye's ability to give fans hip-hop, rap, pop, and R&B (to name just a few) in one show made my $147 well worth it. He even busted out a few tracks from his most recent album which made it extremely pleasing to see who the hardcore fans really were.

The reviewer has failed to take into account how fortunate Auckland and Wellington were to experience tracks from '808s' and tracks Kanye has featured on such as 'Swagga like us' and Put On'. Setlists from the tours earlier legs ended with tracks from ???Graduation???, this being his latest work at the time. The 'slurs' that you dwell only indicate that Kanye is human and is still in the process of memorising his lyrics. Perhaps when you have flashing lights, thousands of screaming fans and a back catalogue in excess of four albums (excl. albums featured on) you too would be excused for slurring.

There was more energy in this gig than I've seen in a long time. I was not in the least bit disappointed. Nas gets props from keeping it real but you gotta give Kanye props for pushing the boundaries and expanding his fans taste in music.

  29. Disagree entirely with the review of Kanye. If considered as an objective outsider then yes maybe the posturing does come across as misplaced arrogance, but he is not aiming at you. There is so much bullshit spoken in the music industry and media, then why not have a stab at speaking directly and with conviction. Truth is, as NaS recognised, Kanye is a pioneer. He is trying to move the genre forward. To say he will be remembered as another P-Diddy is a lazy attempt at 'I said it first' foreshadowing. Truth is Kanye is as good as he thinks he is. His beat making, originaltiy and rapping is in a different league to the likes of the T.I's, 50 cents, P-Diddys, Lil Waynes of the world, all of whom you'd probably review more favourably because of Kanye's polarising persona.

If Kanye is so arrogant, why did he talk about hoping he will eventually be usurped by someone better than he is now. Why did he play for almost 2 hours. Why did he stop to talk to fans after the show.

Yes his attitude to music journos is defensive, but lazy reviews bring that out.

Sure some of it is a front, but the guy is unquestionably at the front of the hip-hop queue and

NaS came out with some old school tracks which didnt bore me at all (He also made me sweat alot). But you have to give it to Kanye good mix of songs, high energy, overall a great performance and I think he lost a bit of weight after the gig he was sweating like theres no 2moro.

  32. Simon, really?. Coming from someone who is such a big Dylan fan, i thought you would have a little more time for post - 808's Kanye. I'm not a big Kanye fan but that 20 minute spiel was amazing, that wasnt a musician, that wasn't a rapper, that was part of the mans soul. It was far better than Dylan's Sarah, which it can be likened to on an ideological level

  33. Nas was far better, his live band actually did something compared to the statues Kanye had. Kanye was eratic and never knew when to stop, for example 15 minutes of Love Lockdown which seemed amatuer.

Still a good night, except for the after party where Nas sat in a corner and we never saw him.

  35. I agree that Nas was awesome...some of you may be hard of hearing because I heard Kanye declare NaS as the God of hip hop. I think if Kanye wanted to he could do "Real" hip hop but he is probably leaving it to the originators. I may be wrong but I think he is more focused on taking 'music' to a new level, not necessarily 'hip hop', and I think he is succeeding. As for his performance, I appreciated that he played for 2 hours, I appreciated that he came out to perform with NaS, I appreciated that he wrote and produced what he was playing which I believe gives him every right to tell his band how he wants it played. I appreciate him telling the editor not to shoot his back because that is a boring shot. Basically I appreciate talent and he has a whole lot of it...

I have a sneaking suspicion the reviewer may have written this scathing article in the hope that Kanye may mention him or the review in an interview or something which is a bit desperate but understandable considering the how great he is.

You got it in one. Kanye needs to start talking to Common, Mos and co more, like he used to. Nowadays, he's just a money-grabbing music company spokesman with no standards or anything endearing musically.

I was pretty gutted when NaS, a man who could sell out on his own in the US, had to be an opener for Kanye. It should have been the other way around.

KW floated the hook and the big reviewer has taken it... of course he (KW not the reviewer - unless he has had a few) is obnoxious... he targets the y generation so he has to be... his interventions to the cameraman and band are sadly part of his act - nothing spontanous there - the lack of real conection with the crowd and spontenaity was the downside of the gig... but on all other counts KW delivered his product and its goooooooood it dont matter if he is the next version x,y, or z

  47. Anything after Late Registration is not hiphop. It is Hip Pop. He loves his UK scene, but he butchered his earlier mixtape songs on Graduation, check the original which is not butchered by Chris Martin vocals or piano.....

Without Rhymefest writing for him anymore, and his classic records that he sampled all run out, it is not a surprise that he needed new direction.

The same can be said with Nas in his career, after his first two albums came weaker efforts, and it took Jay-Z (with Kanye producing Takeover) to spark up the inspiration for Stillmatic

Nas is the man, out did Kanye west who was good aswell, though didnt have the feel of a real Hiphop MC and was not compairable to the Smoked out tour where it had 3 times the atmosphere.

Either way was worth it to see Nas and Kanye West in Wellihood.

  50. I wasn't at the Welly show, but watched Kayne open for U2 in Auckland a couple of years back. I was looking forward to it, but in the end thought he was seriously overrated and disappointed that much of his "music" like much of the 21st century is just badly ripped versions of other music pioneers (Daft Punk as an example).

Maybe he's evolved since earlier times, but the latest generation of hiphop has nothing on the real trail blazers in the rap world like Public Enemy. Forget the ego guys.

You have to expect the gospel from Kanye because he is that good. Also Kanye was saying that he can do what he wants not that he was leaving Hiphop alone. He is hiphop right now. Just look at the songs he did like Swagger like us and American boy. Those are classic Kanye and songs that just recently came out. If you don't know Kanyes work why are you the one Doing the concert Review. Look at the sales of T-Shirts and CD's and tell me the show wasn't a success. THis is the Music Business after all. Good time had by most I'd say.

Keep Keeping everyone on there toes Kanye!! Come back anytime.

  54. It was the same in Melbourne, Kanye going off on 5 minute tangets about people hating him, bagging his backing band and drrrrrraaaaaanggggging out his songs with the voice auto tuner. I had mad respect before, all seems lost in his last rant filled show.

  55. I personally think the reviewer couldn't be more wrong I flew from Christchurch to see 2 of my favourite hip hop artists and was far! from disapointed, only had to take one look at the crowd to see they were feeling the vibe when we threw our diamonds in the sky..

Id agree with Mr Sweatman' that the 808 album isnt his best AND the long winded spiel was slightly boring but after what hes been through c'mon..

Nas was off the hook, loved the Illmatic songs and his band was good too, bass guitar in the 'Hip Hop Is Dead' song.. Minta

Good performance all up 9/10 done, call me the reviewer.

  57. Seriously what show did you go to! Haters shouldn't be posting reviews! 'Diddy 2.0'! please. Your review is very inaccurate and 18 of the 20 people i went with thought it was an awesome perfomance, far better than any hip hop artist i have seen thus far! Understand the art then do a review.

  58. sack the reviewer! Obviously you were hired to speculate and write a negative review. Shame on you for missing out on an awesome show! Kanye's "diary like" monologue was probably the highlight of that concert for me personally! he spoke with his heart on his sleeve and I felt like he really reached out.

Clearly Mr. West is suffering emotionally & the performance of his new songs just humanised the experience for the audience! he's suffered great loss over the last year- His mum & his fiance but his show must go on for us!

    loved it.
