I have no problem with intelligent officers like Lt Watada.  I respect leaders who truly think for themselves, especially when NOT in combat (the latter situation is extremely important in the military).

I can understand why someone would sign up to serve in the military after 911.  After discovering the 911 murderers were in Afghanistan, volunteers were eager to go get them, until ... Iraq's WMD became the rallying cry of the Republican "faithful", i.e., followers of blind faith, not science.  The President's administration made a mockery of "intelligence".  For those who are not educated, faith is not intelligence!

When Lt Watada realized that the 911 enemy was not in Iraq, but the Iraq campaign was developing enemies, he decided to change course, not stay the course!  That is FREEDOM of thought and I applaud him.  The President, as the supreme military leader, should realize that leadership requires intelligence first (officers), which is followed by the less educated faithful.
