Tucker, Ga. - The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2008 All-Conference Football Team, All-Academic Team and Superlatives on Wed., Nov. 19.
The Tuskegee Golden Tigers landed nine players on the all-conference team, four on the first team and five on the second team.
Headlining the list is Jacary Atkinson of Tuskegee University, who was named Offensive Player of the Year and SIAC Player of the Year for consecutive seasons, after leading the Golden Tigers to consecutive undefeated seasons. Tuskegee captured the 2008 SIAC Championship with an unblemished 7-0 conference record and a 10-0 overall record with one game remaining on the schedule. Atkinson passed for 2,444 yards and 23 touchdowns and rushed for 724 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Head Coach Willie Slater of Tuskegee University was awarded SIAC Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Tigers to another undefeated season, a third straight conference crown and a 26-game winning streak. Slater, who was also SIAC Coach of the Year in 2007, has amassed an overall record of 32-2 in three years as head football coach at Tuskegee.
The all-conference first team offensive players include Atkinson and offensive lineman Michael Stevens. Defensively, Danny Anderson (DL) and cornerback Justin Hannah were first team selections. Anderson recorded 28 total tackles, 14.0 tackles for 54 yards in losses, 5.5 quarterback sacks for 39 yards and one QB hurry. Hannah intercepted three passes for 42 yards (one touchdown), had four breakups and 19 tackles.
Running back Tony Forney (543 yards, 4 touchdowns, 10 receptions for 83 yards), wide receiver Jason English (33 receptions for 693 yards, 11 touchdowns), offensive lineman Ira Soares and linebackers Jarvis DeVaughn (40 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss; 9.5 QB sacks, one interception, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, five QB hurries, one pass breakup), and Jonathan Hall (35 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2 fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, one interception) headlined the second team.
Placekicker Dmitri Pelaez and defensive back Daneiro Robiskie, who carry 3.57 and 3.60 grade point averages, highlighted the All-SIAC Academic Team.
The SIAC All-Conference, All-Academic and Superlative Award winners will be formally recognized at the SIAC Football Awards Luncheon on Fri., Dec. 5, 2008 in Columbia, SC at the Embassy Suites Columbia.
