Midwest seeks entries for Retail Display Contest

Midwest, leading designer of the Seasons of Cannon Falls, Colonial Candle and Delight home accents and fragrance brands, announces a call for entries in its second annual Show Us Your Sparkle in-store display contest to recognize independent retailers across the country for their innovation and creativity in retail display. Categories include 2008 Best Retail Display of Colonial Candle Product and 2008 Best Retail Display of Seasons of Cannon Falls Product.

Linens-N-Things store closing sales begin today (Fri., Oct. 17) at the remaining 371 stores in 48 states. Over $1 billion of quality name brand home furnishings will be sold at discounts up to 30%. Quarterly sales down 14% for Tuesday Morning, 12.5% for Haverty's; sales rise at discount clubs

Tuesday Morning Corp.'s net sales for the first quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008, decreased 14% to $173.4 million compared to $201.7 million for the same quarter a year ago. Comparable store sales for the quarter decreased by 17.3% comprised of a 14% decrease in traffic and a 3.3% decrease in average ticket. 

Haverty Furniture Companies, Inc.
reported a decrease of 12.5% in sales for the third quarter to $175.6 million, compared with $200.7 million for the third quarter of 2007. Comparable store sales for the quarter declined 14.9%. Kat Burki Home opens Connecticut showroom

Connecticut interior designer Kat Burki announces the grand opening of Kat Burki Home in Southport, Conn. The 1,800-sq.-ft. colonial-style boutique, located at 35 Old Post Road features a full range of upholstery, furniture, bedding, bath and accessories, all designed by Burki. 
Also showcased are the designer’s bath and bedding collections as well as furniture ranging from coffee tables covered in sting ray shagreen to handmade Parisian chandeliers.

Macy's 'Better World' products benefit Cambodian, Indonesian and Rwandan citizens

Macy’s newly expanded Shop for a Better World collection of unique crafts, gifts and home décor items handmade by artisans in Indonesia, Cambodia and Africa, is now available online and in select Macy's stores. The program, a partnership between Macy’s and Fair Winds Trading, generates income and employment opportunities for the citizens of these countries, providing them with a platform to utilize their traditional skills and craftsmanship. All production takes place in the origin country using only raw materials sourced from the region and employing a large population of women who live in the rural countryside, allowing them to maintain their current residence and avoid the often costly and disruptive process of relocating to cities in search of work.

Charleston Home Market scheduled to run during High Point Market

Charleston, S.C., is getting its own home decor show, to take place during the latter part of the October High Point Market. The Charleston Home Market, hosted by Charleston and Charleston Home magazines, will feature furniture, glass, lighting, ironwork, ceramics and textiles, including the work of local artisans and craftspeople. The venue is the Navy Yard at Noisette, a 3,000 acre city-within-a-city currently being restored as a sustainable community.

Charleston retail makeovers

Four Charleston retailers agreed to let attendees at last month's ART (Accessories Resource Team) Conference spend one afternoon making over their storefront window displays. The event, which took place during business hours, was the designated team activity and competition for this year's annual conference, themed “Southern Inspiration” and held Aug. 21-24 at Charleston Place Hotel.

Giving credit where it's due

While driving down to Charleston last month for the ART Conference, a piece of scrap metal bounced out of a truck and dented the hood of my car. This was a huge dump truck with deep sides that I’m sure has safely transported many a load. The problem was a small opening that had rusted out just above the back license plate, through which bits and pieces of debris and dirt clods bounced through as the truck motored down the highway.

Moe's Home Collections opens two U.S. stores

Two new Moe's Home Collection  retail stores just opened: one at 40547 Albrae St. in Fremont, Calif., and the other at The Crossings, 35025 Enchanted Parkway South, in Federal Way, Wash., a Seattle suburb (Federal Way store is shown in photo, right). The 20,000-sq.-ft. Fremont store is located just north of San Jose and marks Moe's first retail venture in California.

Laguna Beach, Calif. -- Madison West Interiors is relocating its office and design studio in order to expand its business to include retail. The studio and boutique will open to the public Sept. 15. The office will incorporate an eco-friendly design aesthetic in line with LEED certification standards. The studio will incorporate concrete floors, organic material rugs, low VOC painted walls and custom stainless steel desks from reclaimed sources.
